The 721st meeting – Table Topics Boot Camp

Date & Time: 14:00-16:00, September 5th, 2020

Venue: Bankokubashi Conf Center #402 + Zoom

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We conducted “Table Topics Boot Camp” as our 721st meeting to hone our impromptu speech skills.

TM A hosted the meeting since has lots of experience as a member of Tokyo Table Topics Toastmasters Club.

At the beginning of session, each of us set goals of the day.
Some focused on building solid structure, paying attention to vocal variety, ensuring humor etc.

 

 

Participants were divided into groups of three to go through casual table topics sessions after having impromptu speech tips from TM A.

Session was done as follows.

Step 1: A san asks a question. Start timing for 5 minutes.

Step 2: B san speaks for 2 min.

              C san offers feedback until timer says “Time’s up!” (3 min.)

Step 3: B san practices the speech one more time until A san says times up.

Step 4: Rotate

Then, all participants got together to have the real session.

TM A give a question to a participant, s/he will make an answer to the question
Just after completing the speech, the other person who are assigned by TM A will give a feedback.
Giving feedback just after the speech was very challenging for us since we don’t have much experience on that.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The questions by TM A were very unique and interesting, so all participants enjoyed listening to the responses of speakers
and feedback from other speakers.

We all recognized our speeches were better than usual since we had exercises within small groups prior to the real sessions.
Warm up is very important to make a good speech.

I believe we were able to have some sort of confidence of speaking impromptu throughout the boot camp.

On behalf of the club, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to TM A conducted such a brilliant session!

第720回例会レポート/720th Regular Meeting Report

Date and Time: 14:00-16:00, August 15th, 2020

Venue: Yokohama City Kaiko Kinen Kaikan #9 Conf Room + Zoom

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The regular meeting on August 15th was held online and onsite simultaneously.

Induction ceremony has been made because a SriLankan friend expressed his intention to be a our member.

His enrollment was successfully granted. Congratulations!

The meeting theme was “Summer drink or food”, we could know drink/food each members would like to have in hot weather. Beer is majority in our club because many of us go to pub after the meeting.

 

TM D.T. conducted table topic session, it was the first attempt for him.

Questions were realated Obon holiday.

it is something conventional theme but his questions were interesting and creative

like about agent service for visiting a grave and online homecoming gathering etc.

 

As for prepared speeches, we could enjoy listening to variety of speeches.

A new member TM K.I. did icebreaker speech,

TM T.N. explained leadership style referring to Chinese political philosopher- Han Fei,

TM R.K. offered the YTMC’s PR strategies and TM H.A.

TM H.A. shared how to deal with the emotions from her real life.  

 

Evaluators gave valuable feedback to each speaker, I am sure they will take those and plug into their next speech.

 

 

26 participants enjoyed the weekend theater (Onsite: 15+1 guest / Online: 8+2guests) even Obon holiday week,

It was fantastic and I recognize engagement to our club is high.

 

The next meeting held on September 5th will be a special. Table Topics Boot Camp!

第719回例会レポート – Vacation

The 719th meeting

Date & Time: 14:00, Aug 1st, 2020

Venue: Yokohama City Kaiko Kinen Kaikan #7 Conf Room

 

The 5th hybrid meeting was conducted with 25 participants (13+1 Onsite and 6+5 via Online)

Sudden Zoom software shutdown happened at the very beginning of the meeting, but resumed soon thanks to our IT.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Our president took Table topic master role, he gave us interesting questions about vacation.

Respondents were struggled with crafting the answers, it was like brain teasers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There are 4 prepared speakers, 1 from online and 3 onsite.

We listened to the icebreaker of veteran member, two of them shared us the lifestyle change because of pandemic.

Also, a member explained the research of the history of Germany. 

 

Evaluation session was made by 4 evaluators, they gave valuable feedback to each speakers.

A member took evaluator of evaluator role, everyone reminded the basics of evaluation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was interesting that all best speakers (Table topic, Evaluator and Prepared speaker) are from online.

Great job all awarded members!

 

Also, the good thing for us was a guest showed the intention to join our club, would like to keep this momentum.

 

After the regular meeting, we went pub to make a reflection of the meeting as usual.

 

Our next meeting will be held on Aug 15th at the same venue.

Am looking forward to meeting you all.

第718回例会レポート – Summer has come!

Date&Time: 14:00-16:00, July 18th, 2020

Venue: Bankokubashi Conf Center #405 + Zoom

Theme: “Summer has come!”

 

We conducted 4th hybrid meeting.

There were 21 participants in the meeting (13 members + 1 guest onsite and 5 members + 2 guests via online)

One of experienced members took TMOD job. He used a face shield to prevent coronavirus, it was cool.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We had four prepared speakers and evaluators.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Each speaker performed amazing speech with creative approach.

  • Made icebreaker regarding the life after retirement
  • Elaborated how to convince partner to buy piano.
  • Sharing the article of toastmasters magazine
  • Introduced The book reading with daughter

 

Even we faced trouble in audio, our meeting was successful.

The next meeting will be held at Kaiko Kinen Kaikan.

Date and Time: 14:00, July 4th, 2020

We were back in Hatoba-Kaikan and hosted hybrid meeting via zoom.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the beginning, we had an induction ceremony and welcoming 2 new members!

That boded very well for our club!

Then the meeting was conducted based on Roberts rules of order as usual.

Four public speakers and four evaluators colored our meeting. It was fantastic!

Also, our VPE ran a workshop with all participants to determine the educational strategies for this term.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We are continuously trying to accumulate know-how on methods of hybrid meeting to ensure all participants enjoy the meeting. Please give your feedback if any.

第716回例会レポート – The New Normal

私たち横浜トーストマスターズクラブは6月20日にオンラインと会場とのハイブリッド例会を開催しました。会場の平沼記念レストハウスにはゲスト2名を含む13名、オンラインにはゲスト1名を含む6名が参加して、総勢19名が例会に参加しました。

 

この日は2019-2020年度の最後の例会でした。つまり今期会長の私にとって最後の例会でした。その最後の日に私がTMODを担当させて頂けるという粋な計らいでした。

例会のテーマは”ニューノーマル”。

 

この日はゲストも参加しての即興スピーチ、4名が準備スピーチを行い、大いに盛り上がりました。メンバーそれぞれの英語スピーチを聞いて、皆さんの1年間のスキルアップを実感しました。改めてトーストマスターズ活動の意義を感じた日でした。

 

来期オフィサーの就任セレモニーでは、新会長が来期スローガン”Blue Hub”を紹介しました。横浜の”青”、人と人を繋ぐ”ハブ”、私たちが愛してやまない”パブHub(82)”など色々な思いが詰まった素晴らしいスローガンでした。早くも来期が楽しみです。

 

ハイブリット例会という”ニューノーマル”を大成功で終えることができました。

 

最後に横浜トーストマスターズの皆さん、今期オフィサーの皆さん、1年間、本当に有難うございました。来期はもっと素晴らしいクラブになると確信しています。

 

TMOD and 2019-2020 President

 

 

 

We, Yokohama Toastmasters Club, held a hybrid (online + onsite) meeting on June 20th. At the venue Hiranuma Memorial Rest House there are 19 participants joined the meeting (13 attendees including 2 guests on site and 6 including 1 guest via online)

The day was the last regular meeting of the 2019-2020 toast fiscal year. It means that it was the last meeting for me as a president of this club too. It was a cool idea that I took the role of TMOD on the very last day. Thanks.

The theme of the meeting was “The New Normal”.

 

We had improvised speeches session with guests and 4 prepared speeches so the meeting was very lively. I felt that everyone’s skills are improved for their one year of efforts by listening to each member’s English speech. I re-recognized the significance of the Toastmasters activity.

 

At the next term officer installation ceremony, the new president introduced the next term slogan “The Blue Hub!”.  It was a wonderful slogan that has multiple meanings, such as the “blue” of Yokohama, the “hub” that connects people as well as the “82(=Hub)” we love. I’m looking forward to next year’s activities!

We finished the Hybrid Meeting as one of our “New Normal” with great success.

 

Lastly, all members and officers, thank you very much for your cooperation.

I’m sure our club will be a much better one next term.

Meeting #715 June 6th
Theme: “Rainy Season”

6月6日(土)の例会はYTMC初のオンライン&オンサイトのハイブリッドで開催されました。
緊急事態宣言も緩和され、オンサイトの通常例会も再開。一方でオンサイト例会へ参加したい会員も健康上、外出への不安を抱えている人もいます。オンサイト例会を映しながら、オンラインでもいつも通り参加できるよう様々な状況の方々へ配慮をした形で例会を実施しました。

会場へ到着すると、TM.R.Kがなんとノートパソコン2台、ポータブルモニター1台、タブレット1台、スマホ1台、スペシャルスピーカー&マイクをセットし、まるでスパイ活動のようでした。音出し以上に、会場の音声を拾うことが難しいのですが、高価なスピーカーのおかげで全く問題なく例会を進めることができました。

本日のTMODは初めてのTM.Y..O。直前に役割を持っている参加者の突然の不参加連絡などで慌しかった上、初のハイブリッド例会ということもあり、少し緊張気味な面持ちも機器のスムーズなオペレーションと共に、運びはすぐにスムーズになりました。本日のテーマは梅雨です。ジメジメ嫌な季節をみなさんはどう過ごしているのでしょうか。

本日の単語はStunning。すてきな,魅力的な,すばらしいなどという意味です。

テーブルトピックは突然のピンチヒッターで映画好きのTM.S.Iより、家での過ごし方でおすすめの映画や映像、音楽などの質問が出されました。

事前準備スピーチでは、ベテランのTM.A.I、ピンチヒッターTM.R.K、わがクラブのプレジデントTM.K.Oが各々に与えられた目的に沿ってスピーチを行いました。TM.A.Iは、海外出張の日にお財布を忘れてしまった話をし、どうなっていくのかドキドキする展開でした。

論評ではそれぞれオンサイトスピーカーをオンラインの論評者が論評するなど、ハイブリッド感満載でした。

本日のベストテーブルトピックスピーカーは、TM.T.S、論評はTM.A.T、そしてベストスピーカはTM.A.Iでした。

初のハイブリッド例会はオンライン参加者がオンサイト参加者が誰がいるのかがよくわからない、などの課題は残りましたが、トラブルもなく大成功に終わりました。これも全てたくさんの機器を携えセッティングしてくれたTM.R.Kのおかげです。

今後はしばらく継続するであろうハイブリッド例会ですが、見つかった課題に取り組みながら更にパワーアップしていくことになると思います。

Meeting number 715 was held as a hybrid meeting, online and on site for the first time to YTMC.

The emergency declaration was canceled and the on-site regular meeting resumed. There are members who wish to attend the on-site meeting but they cannot due to their anxiety for their health on the other hand. We took it account and decided to hold a hybrid meeting.

Arriving at the meeting room, TM.R.K prepared and set the meeting room with two laptop computers, a portable monitor, a tablet, a smart phone and a special speaker & microphone. He looked engaging spy activity. What is most difficult part of hybrid meeting is to pick up a sound rather than making sound. But the exclusive speaker solved all of the problems.

Today’s TMOD is TM.Y.O who took the role for the first time. He seemed a bit nervous due to the sudden cancellation of speech and changes agenda, also the first hybrid meeting. But it went away soon with smooth operation by all electric devices. He carried the meeting quite well. The meeting theme was “Rainy Season”. How do people spend the humid and annoying season?

The word of the day was “stunning” which means wonderful, attractive and great.

The table topic master was TM.S.I who loves movies. He was also a pinch hitter for the sudden cancellation. The questions were how to spend time at home with movie, videos, music.

The prepared speakers were TM.A.I who was very experienced speaker, pinch hitter TM.R.K and our president TM.K.O. TM.A.I talked about his experiences that he forgot his wallet when he left for his business trip to overseas. The story was so exciting.

The evaluation session was started with on-line participant evaluating on-site speaker. It was real hybrid meeting.

The best table topic speaker was TM.T.S and the best evaluator was TM.A.T. The best speaker was TM.A.I.

The very first hybrid meeting hit a big success. We found some improvement points which was the on-site participants cannot identify the on-line participants. But it run without trouble due to TM.R.K who set up everything.

The hybrid meeting is to be continued. We’re sure to get this better with tackling challenges.

Meeting #714 May 16th
Theme: “Signs & Gestures”

5月16日(土)の例会はオンラインで行われました。
テーマは“Signs & Gestures”です。オンライン例会が恒例になってきた昨今、画面の中で表現をするのにサイン・ジェスチャーがよりキーになってきたと感じてこのテーマを挙げました。

そのテーマを受けて本日のワードはエアクォート””です。人差し指と中指を立ててピースサインのように顔の横に両手を上げて立てた二本指を前にクイクイと動かすジェスチャーです(主に欧米で会話中に使われるジェスチャーの一つで、ある単語や節を発話するときに両の手を顔の横でピースサイン(Vサイン)のような形をつくり、クイクイと指を曲げる動作のことである。それによって発話中の単語に、印刷文中でダブルクオーテーションマーク(“”)で括弧されたときと同様の効果をもたらす。Wikipediaより)単語ではないですが、英語圏の中でも特に北米で主に使用されており、話している文中の語句をくくって皮肉を込めて強調するジェスチャーですが、みなさん上手く使えるでしょうか!?

テーマに合わせて、各役割を持っている方々への質問は英語圏で使用されているサインまたはジェスチャーやそれらにまつわるエピソードを紹介してください、というもの。みなさん色々と紹介してくれました。個人的に懐かしいなと思ったのは、ハワイに行くと一番に覚えるハワイ式のピースサイン。

テーブルトピックは在宅勤務中のTM.K.Tより、子供にフォーカスした家での過ごし方で質問が出されました。

事前準備スピーチでもコロナウィルスを受けてのスピーチが多く、現役英語教師から次世代の教育スタイルという興味深いスピーチを聞くことができました。

論評ではそれぞれオンラインスピーチという難しさの中で、どのように効果的にスピーチを行ったらよいかのアドバイスや注意点が繰り出しました。

本日のベストテーブルトピックスピーカーは、TM.K.N、論評はTM.T.S、そしてベストスピーカは現役英語教師のTM.A.Hでした。

オンライン例会もだいぶ慣れてきました。スピーチ中は基本ミュートなので聴衆の反応が聞こえてこないだけに、ちょっと不安になったりもしますが、オンサイト例会と同じように会員全員が楽しんでいます。
次回はとうとうオンサイトが解禁になるかも知れません!

The regular meeting on 16th May was held on line.
The meeting theme was “Signs & Gestures”. Given the on-line meeting has been becoming routine recently, “Signs & Gestures” has become more important for expression on a screen. That’s the reason why I brought this up.

The word of the day was the air quotes “” which are virtual quotation marks formed in the air with one’s fingers when speaking. This is typically done with both hands held shoulder-width apart and at the eye or shoulders level of the speaker, with the index and middle fingers on each hand flexing at the beginning and end of the phrase being quoted.

All role takers were requested to introduce sign or gesture which is used in English speaking culture or an episode relating them. They introduced various sings or gestures. Personally, I miss the Hawaiian “V” sign which you learn first when you go to Hawaii.

The table topic master TM.K.T gave us various questions regarding how to spend time at home as a child or how did you spend when you were child.
The prepared speeches today were relating to COVID 19 most. The English teacher on active service gave a speech about the education style for the next generation which was quite interesting.

The evaluation session was also very active. There were lots of advice and points to make note for giving on-line speech.

The best table topic speaker was TM.K.N and the best evaluator was TM.T.S. The best speaker was the English teacher TM.H.A..

We all are getting used to the on-line regular meeting. The speakers may feel a bit nervous since they cannot hear the audience’s reaction. But we all enjoy the meeting as well as on-site meeting.

Report of the 713th meeting
Saturday, May 2

As usual, the facility could not be used due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
so it was held online, but 19 people including two guests participated.
The theme of the meeting was “How to enjoy staying home”.
We could know the various ways of enjoy to stay home and difficulty.
The good thing about being online is that you can join with children.
Some cute smiles thrilled the meeting.
We tried to display the color of the timer on the backboard, closing our
eyes and voting with our hands raised.
All of the speech and evaluation was so wonderful. It was a high-quality
meeting.

5月2日(土)

いつものように、COVID-19の大流行により使用できなくなったため、オンラインで開催しましたが、ゲスト2名を含む19名が参加しました。
会議のテーマは「在宅の楽しみ方」。
家にいる楽しみのいろいろな方法や難しさを知ることができました
オンラインであることの良い点は、子供と一緒に参加できることです。
キュートな笑顔がミーティングを盛り上げました。
タイマーのカラーをバックボードに映したり、目をつぶって挙手で投票するなど工夫してみました。
スピーチも論評もいずれもとても素晴らしく。質の高い会合となりました。

Feb.15th was fine day.
Word of the Day was “magnificent”.”
The meeting theme was “My Policy”.
“I don’t eat nato according to grandmother’s’ last words.”
” I wear the socks from the left foot.”
“I eat breakfast every day even if a hangover headache.”
We could hear a lot of unique personal policies.

Table Topics were
“Childcare leave”
“Needs for new material for Olympic games.” etc.

Prepared Speech were
“What mentorship can do”
Pathways “Innovative Planning”
“Contrary Person”
Pathways “Dynamic Leadership”
“Who Am I ?!”
Pathways “Visionary Communication”

We could learn follows,
what were mentorship and personal growth,
the mind of the contrary person save human security,
how Visionary Communication effects child care.

We had 3 guests and enjoyed meeting together.
All guests said come again to the meeting.
It was truly a “magnificent meeting”.

2月15日は晴れた日でした。

今日の言葉は「magnificent」。
会のテーマは「私のポリシー」でした。
「私は祖母の最後の言葉に従ってNATOを食べません。」
「左足から靴下を履きます。」
「二日酔いの頭痛があっても、私は毎日朝食を食べます。」
など、多くのユニークな個人ポリシーを聞くことができました。

テーブルトピックは
「育児休職」
「オリンピックの新しい素材が必要です。」 等

準備されたスピーチは
以下を学ぶことができました、
メンターシップと個人的な成長は何でしたか、
反対者の心が人間の安全を守る
ビジョナリーコミュニケーションが育児に与える影響。

3人のゲストがいて、一緒にミーティングを楽しみました。
すべてのゲストは、会議に再び来ると言いました。
本当に「素晴らしい会」でした。
