The 802th Regular Meeting Report

Date&Time: 14:00-16:00 September 16th 2023/ Venue: Hatoba Kaikan + Online

The second meeting of the year began on a slightly cold and rainy day with 23 members including 3 guests. Our president gave a detailed explanation of the Toastmasters International Speech Contest that will be held from the next month. This year, the national contest will be a hybrid format, which we are looking forward to.

Everyone is encouraged to try out for this once-a-year opportunity!

Today’s word of the day is “desire”, introduced by TM I. He explained that we should use “desire” when we feel stronger than “want”.
今年２回目の例会は少し寒くて雨の降る日になりましたが、２０名＋３名のゲストをお迎えして始まりました。会長から、翌月から行われるトーストマスターズスピーチコンテストについて丁寧に説明がありました。今年は全国大会はハイブリッド形式のになるとのことで楽しみですね。

皆さん、一年に一度の機会なので、ぜひ挑戦してみましょう！

本日の言葉は、TM I から紹介されたdesireです。wantよりも強い気持ちの時にdesireを使ってみようと説明されました。

And this time TMOD was served by one of our experienced members, TM. SN. TM S decided on the theme of “how to get over the cold winter. It was perfect for a very cold day like today. The opinions of the members, such as installing underfloor heating (but the family gets mad at him), doing winter sports, wearing clothes like a daruma doll & junihitoe, etc. were introduced in a fun way.

そして今回のTMODは、TM. SNが務めました。大ベテランのSさんが決めた今回のテーマは、“寒い冬の乗り越え方”。今日のようなとても冷える日にはピッタリのもの。メンバーによる意見、床暖房をつける（でも家族には怒られる笑）、冬ならではのスポーツをする、ダルマのように＆十二単のように着込むこと、などが楽しく紹介されました。

The Table Topic Session was moderated by TM SH. Today’s question was on the theme of hot pot. It was also a wintery theme, and I felt warmed up just listening to the answers. Since it was a familiar theme, both the speakers and the audience enjoyed the session very much.
1. What is your favorite hot pot and why?
2. What is your favorite ingredient to put into hot pot?
3. If you have no limit of your budget, what hot pot do you want to eat?
4. Which do you prefer for the last dish of hot pot, rice or noodle?
5. If you could go to the moon, what do you want to do?
続いてのTable Topicsは、TM MTの司会で進められました。本日の質問は鍋がテーマです。こちらも冬らしいテーマで、話を聞いてるだけてなんだか温まる気がしました。身近なテーマなので、指名された人達も見ている皆さんも、とても楽しみながらセッションを過ごしていました。

After Table Topic Session, the prepared speech session began. There were three speakers for this session.

The first speaker, TM N, shared about his 30 years of sailing experience. He used slides to explain the world of sailing in an easy-to-understand way that many people may not know.

The second speaker, TM T, shared her resolution for this year. It was wonderful to see TM T, a senior in life, talk about her feelings about entering her 80s this year with a sense of humor. I felt that the best part of Toastmasters activity is to hear people’s thoughts like this.

The last speaker TM H shared a story about her family. Her speech gave me an opportunity to think about the feeling of happiness.

即興スピーチセッションに続いて、準備スピーチセッションが始まりました。今回のスピーカーは3名でした。
最初のスピーカーはTM Nは３０年に渡るセーリングの経験について共有してくれました。知らない人が多いであろうセーリングの世界について、スライドを使ってわかりやすく説明してくれました。
2番目のスピーカーであるTM Tは今年の抱負を語ってくれました。人生の大先輩であるTM Tさん、今年８０代に入る心境をユーモアも交えながら語る姿は素晴らしかったです。こんな風に人の想いが聴けることがトーストマスターズの醍醐味だと感じました。
TM Hは家族の話を紹介してくれました。幸せを感じる気持ちについて考える機会になりました。

After a short break, TM.K. led the evaluation session, in which the three evaluators gave their own feedback. They spoke in accordance with the objectives of the project and made concrete suggestions as well as pointing out areas for improvement. There is so much to learn from the evaluation. Let’s take this feedback and apply it to our own speeches.

As a general evaluation on the meeting as a whole, there was a suggestion to ask more questions on table topics & try to speak as long as possible. Table topic Session is always an issue for our club.

Finally, the best from each session were awarded at the awards session.

Lastly, we moved on to the Award session.

休憩の後は、TM.Kの進行で論評セッションがスタートしました。3人の論評者がそれぞれの形で論評をしましたが、さすがベテランの論評者たち。プロジェクトの目的に沿って話したり、改善点を指摘するだけでなく具体的な提案をしたりしていました。論評者から学ぶことはとても多いですね。今回のフィードバックを受けて自分たちのスピーチに生かしていきましょう。

例会全体への論評として、テーブルトピックの質問を増やそう＆できるだけ長く話すようにしようという提案がありました。テーブルトピックはうちのクラブの課題ですね。

最後は、アワードセッションで各セッションから各々最優秀者が表彰されました。

I learn something inspiring at every meeting. There are many times when I feel down that I did not do well, but this motivates me to do it again the next time. If you are interested, please come and visit Yokohama TMC.

It’s time to start YTMC 2024 journey! Many members were attended to the 1st time club meeting of the new year and we had three guests there. The VPE, who were working on behalf of the club President this time, delivered the opening speech. Since we all knew about the tragic earthquake in Noto peninsula on the 1st day of the new year and the extensive air crafts collision in Haneda airport on the following day that happened just a couple of days ago, he could not help but refer to these shocking news and showed his condolence. Followed by his speech, we had today’s guest introductions and an induction ceremony. We were are happy to see that an ex YTMC member decided to come back to be a member again.

YTMC2024の旅が始まる！新年1回目のクラブミーティングには多くのメンバーが出席し、ゲストも3名来ていただきました。今回は会長代理の副会長が挨拶に立ちました。新年早々、能登半島で地震が発生し、翌日には羽田空港で航空機の衝突事故が発生した。スピーチに続いて、本日のゲスト紹介と入社式が行われた。YTMCの元メンバーが再びメンバーとして戻ってくることになった。

 

Word-of-the-day “Spring” was announced by KH. Other than a common meaning as noun, he explained another meaning as adjective. Even though the word itself was catchy for the 1st time club meeting of the new year, it seemed to be rather a bit of challenging for all to take this word into their speeches.

今日の言葉「春」がKHによって発表された。名詞としての一般的な意味の他に、形容詞としての意味も説明された。新年1回目のクラブ例会としてはキャッチーな言葉ではあったが、全員がこの言葉をスピーチに取り入れるのは、かなりハードルが高かったようだ。

The TMOD took over conducting the meeting and he introduced respective role takers. The meeting theme was “Superhero” and we enjoyed seeing various superheroes when he introduced each role taker and speaker.

ミーティングの進行はTMODが担当し、各ロールテーカーを紹介した。ミーティングのテーマは “スーパーヒーロー “であり、彼が各役割担当者とスピーカーを紹介する際、様々なスーパーヒーローを見ることができた。

 

In the table topic session by MN, each topic was being connected with a joint theme, either “New year resolution” or “Superhero” 

 

1: What bad habits do you want to quit this year?

2: What challenges couldn’t you achieve last year?

3: What do you want to achieve in YTMC in this year?

4: What do you want to do if you had a super power?

5: What do you want to change if you had a super power to change the events in your history?

6: Who is your superhero?

 

Each speaker responded them with a smart answer while a topic is occasionally challenging.

MNによるテーブル・トピック・セッションでは、各トピックが “新年の決意 “または “スーパーヒーロー “という共同テーマでつながれていた。

1：今年中にやめたい悪習慣は？

2：昨年達成できなかった課題は？

3：今年YTMCで達成したいことは？

4: スーパーパワーがあったら何をしたいですか？

5: もしスーパーパワーがあったら、自分の歴史を変えるために何を変えたいですか？

6: あなたのスーパーヒーローは誰ですか？

時折挑戦的なトピックもありつつ、各スピーカーはスマートな回答でそれらに応えた。

 

In the prepared speech session, we had three speeches:

 

1: “Is this real” by SN

2: “Five Five Five” by AH

3: “The turning point month” by SH

Every speeches were attractive enough to start a 1st time club meeting in the new year. The 1st speech was relating to one of recent IT topics, AI [Artificial Intelligence]. The 2nd speech was its speaker’s challengeable trial, “Speech without a script”. The speech was formed with a series of a short episode connecting with the key word “5”. It was resulted in successfully because almost audience enjoyed it with laughing. The 3rd speech was conducted smoothly in both of the content and the performance even though the speaker was relatively new to the club and has yet finished so many speeches ever. 

 

The evaluation session, conducted by TA, must be a valuable opportunity not only for the speaker but also for everyone to brush up their speech and presentation skills. All evaluator who watched every details patiently presented a thoughtful, useful, and honest comment. Especially, AY’s attempt was remarkable and enjoyable using the back of the big whiteboard on the stage—the evaluator wrote down some useful suggestions on the back and hided it to the audience until the time of the evaluation. The timer, ah-counter, and grammarian also delivered their job satisfactorily.

After the awarded session and the comments from the guests, the club meeting was closed successfully. See you all in the next meeting!

 

 

 

本日も気温は22度！クリスマスっぽさも吹き飛ぶ季節外れの暑さですが、会場はクリスマス気分最高潮！さて、どんな例会になるでしょう。

 

Today, the temperature was 22 degrees Celsius! It is unseasonably hot, which blows away the Christmassy atmosphere, but the venue is in the Christmas spirit! Well, what kind of meeting will it be?

本日のTOMDはダブルロールで今年入会したTM S.S and S.Hさん夫婦です。初めてのTOMDですが、出だしから盛り上げてくれ、堂々のデビューです。

Today’s TOMD is TM S.S. and S.H. who joined this year as a double roller. It was their first TOMD, but they made a lively and impressive debut.

本日は事前準備スピーチから始まる構成です。

Today’s event is structured to start with the prepared speech.

1人目のスピーカーは、TM M.Nさんです。

スピーチタイトルはLastSantaです。サンタクロースについてのスピーチ。心が温まる家族とサンタのエピソードでした。

The first speaker is TM M.N. The title of his speech is “LastSanta.

The title of his speech is LastSanta. This speech is about Santa Claus. It was a heart-warming episode about a family and Santa Claus.

2人目のスピーカーはTM K.Rさんです。

スピーチタイトルは、Chirstmas：Speical Seasonです。

クリスマスディナーについて語ってくれました。日本ではKFCが伝統になっていますが、それがなぜなのか！食べることについてと特別な時に食べるものが私たちにどんな良いことがあるか、など興味深いエピソードが盛りだくさんでした。

The second speaker was TM K.R.

His speech title is Chirstmas: Speical Season.

He talked about Christmas dinner. In Japan, KFC has become a tradition, but why is that? There were many interesting episodes about eating and what good the food we eat on special occasions can do us.

 

 

3人目のスピーカーはTM R.S さんです。

スピーチタイトルは、Listen  to the  nature‘s musicです。

トレッキングについての素晴らしい経験を話してくれました。山の自然の中で過ごして感動したことを表現豊かに語り、自分も自然の中にいるようなスピーチでした。

The third speaker was TM R.S.

The title of her speech was Listen to nature’s music.

She shared her wonderful experience about trekking. Her speech was so expressive about how she was moved by spending time in the nature of the mountains that it was as if she was in the nature himself.

4人目のスピーチはTM T.Mさんです。

メンターについてのスピーチです。仕事におけるメンタリングとToastmasterのメンタリングについて、メンターを持つことの必要性を語ってくれました。

The fourth speech was given by TM T.M.

This speech is about mentoring. He talked about mentoring at work and Toastmaster’s mentoring, and the necessity of having a mentor.

事前準備スピーチの後は、今回の例会の特別プログラム、クリスマスプレゼント交換です。輪になり、もろびとこぞりての歌にのって、プレゼントを回します。みなさん、何をもらいましたか

After the prepared speeches, we had a special program for this meeting, Christmas gift exchange. Everyone formed a circle and passed around presents to the song “Joy to the world”. What did everyone receive?

 

休憩の後にOBの皆さんなどからの８００回記念のお祝いメッセージが披露されました。

After a short break, congratulatory messages for the 800th anniversary were presented by alumni and others.

のってきたところで、テーブルトピックです。

本日のテーブルトピックマスターはベテランの大野さんです。今回は多くの方に話していただくため、マックス1分半のスピーチです。ホリデーシーズンにまつわるトピックが満載でテンポよく進んだ楽しいセッションでした。

After getting into the swing of things, it was time for the table topic.

Today’s table topic master is Mr. Ohno, a veteran. This time, the maximum length of the speech was 1.5 minutes in order to allow many people to speak. It was an enjoyable session full of topics related to the holiday season and proceeded at a good tempo.

 

論評セッションの総合論評は、トーストマスターも結婚生活も経験豊富なベテランTM S.N and S.T夫婦のダブルロールです。

The General Evaluator for the evaluation session was a double roll by experienced couple TM S.N and S.T.,  for both Toastmasters and married life.

1人目の論評はTMM.Kさんです。心温まるスピーチながら有益な情報も含まれる良いスピーチな一方、ジェスチャーなどに課題があるという、プロジェクトに沿った素晴らしい論評でした。

The first evaluator was TM M.K. It was a great commentary on the project, with a good speech that was heartwarming but also informative, but also had some issues with gestures and other aspects of the speech.

2人目の論評は、TM A.Hさんです。

季節感のあるスピーチタイトルで、構成が良かったとのこと。もう少し色付けがあると良いとのこと、Speed、Position。Punchiline、Eye  Contact、Emoion、Clear  Voice、Hand  Gesuture、SPEECHの冒頭をもじった論評に全員感服していました。

The second evaluator was TM A.H.

She said that the speech title was seasonable and well structured. She said that a little more coloring would be nice, and all were impressed with her evaluation, which was a play on Speed, Position, Punchiline, Eye Contact, Emoion, Clear Voice, Hand Gesuture, and the beginning of SPEECH.

3人目の論評は、本日のゲストのWさんです。

TM A.Hさんがホワイトボードに書いたポイントを使いながら、良い点と課題を交えた論評はお手本になる論評でした。

The third evaluator was today’s guest, Mr. W.

Using the points written on the whiteboard by TM A.H., her commentary with good points and issues was a model for others to follow.

4人目の論評は、TM N.Mさんです。

良い点と課題点を挙げ、スピーカーのモチベーションを上げる熱の入った論評でした。

His evaluation was very passionate and motivating to the speakers, listing both good points and issues.
