The hot summer has departed, making way for the beautiful autumn in Yokohama. Despite the sunny day, there’s a noticeable chill in the air, allowing us to truly feel the arrival of autumn. Our regular meeting at Hatoba-Kaian was a success, with the room filled with members and three guests. 熱い夏が去り、美しい秋が横浜に広がっています。晴れた日ではありますが、空気には秋の訪れを感じる寒さがあります。波止場会館での通常のミーティングは成功に終わり、たくさんのメンバーと3人のゲストが参加されました。

The Toastmaster of the Day was TM. M., in her debut role as TMOD. It was her time to shine! Her charming opening remarks and well-prepared comments captivated all the members. 本日のトーストマスターズオブザデイはTM. M.で、彼女のTMODデビューでした。　彼女は輝いていました！　魅力的なオープニングコメントと軽快な司会進行はすべてのメンバーを引き込みました。

Today’s Word of the Day: Borderless

While we hear this term every day nowadays, let’s incorporate it into our speeches and comments!

今日の「今日のワード」: Borderless これは最近よく毎日耳にする言葉ですが、スピーチやコメントに取り入れてみましょう！

Then, we moved on to the Table Topic Session led by TM. T. This session is one of the most exciting moments during a regular meeting. Several simple questions were posed, and assigned speakers were relaxed and enjoyed giving impromptu speeches.

TM. T.によるテーブルトピックセッションに移りました。このセッションはミーティングで最も興奮する瞬間の一つです。いくつかのシンプルな質問が投げかけられ、割り当てられたスピーカーはリラックスして即興スピーチを楽しんでいました。

1.If you want to see beautiful autumn leaves, where do you recommend?

TM. S suggested the beautiful park of Shinjuku and his hometown surrounded by mountains.

TM. Sは新宿の美しい公園と、山に囲まれた彼の故郷を提案しました。

 

2.How do you enjoy travel?

TM. O expressed a desire to experience new places with unfamiliar cultures.

旅行を楽しむ方法は？ TM. Oは新しい場所で異文化を体験したいと述べました。

3.Share an unexpected challenge of travel.

TM. S recounted her first experience in New York, where she challenged herself to reach her sister’s apartment without support and ended up losing her luggage!

旅行の予期せぬトラブル談を聞かせてください。

TM. Sはニューヨークを初めて訪れた経験を振り返り、ご家族が住むアパートにサポートなしで訪問し、途中、荷物を失ったエピソードを紹介しました！

4.Did you join the local festival during travel?

TM. T shared an experience of visiting a hot spring place during a business trip, witnessing beautiful fireworks surrounded by many couples.

旅行中に地元の祭りに遭遇したことがありますか？

TM. Tは仕事での出張中に温泉地を訪れ、美しい花火を見た経験を共有しました。

5.What lesson did you learn from local people?

TM. K emphasized the need to improve English skills to communicate with kind local people.

地元の人々から学んだ教訓は？

TM. Kは親切な地元の人々とのコミュニケーションのために英語スキルを向上させる必要性を強調しました。

 

Now, we moved on to the Prepared Speech Session.　

次に、メインのスピーチセッションに移りました。

 

1.Speaker: TM. A | Title: Priority Order

Objective: Managing a difficult audience. TM. A handled several challenging audiences professionally, and her presentation on psychology was intriguing.

スピーチ中によくいる難しい聴衆をいかにコントロールするかが彼女の課題。TM. Aはいくつかの厳しい聴衆をプロフェッショナルに対応しました。また、心理学に関する彼女のプレゼンテーションは興味深いものでした。

2.Speaker: TM. N | Title: End of Life Work

TM. N shared how we should spend the rest of our lives with five things she wants to do, offering a persuasive message based on her experience as a YTMC member.
She introduced the term “SKI” (Spending the Kids’ Inheritance). We should embrace the idea of enjoying life together with our family!

A lovely story about her memorable food experience in the southern part of the U.S., specifically New Orleans with “Crawfish.” I also thought this is disgusting to eat, but after hearing her speech, I also wanted to go there and taste spicy Crawfish!

4.Speaker: TM. T | Title: Talk To and Speak To

Based on her experience supporting foreign travelers in Japan, TM. T highlighted the importance of personal support over the convenience of smartphones.

日本で外国人旅行者をサポートする経験に基づいて、TM. Tはスマートフォンの利便性よりも個人的なサポートの重要性を強調しました。

Next, we moved to the Evaluation Session. The General Evaluator was TM. A.

評価セッションに移りました。総合評価者はTM. Aでした。

 

She mentioned that there is no teacher in Toastmasters, and all members evaluate each other. This style is a standard practice globally in Toastmasters. (She laughed after making this comment, considering her occupation as a schoolteacher)

彼女はトーストマスターズには先生がおらず、すべてのメンバーがお互いに評価するというスタイルでと語り、このスタイルは世界中のトーストマスターズで実践であると述べました（彼女は自分の職業が学校の先生であるので、このコメントの後に笑いました）。

Good Points: Interesting topic with visuals, good preparation, successfully handled difficult persons.

YTMC Meeting#796 / 2023.10.21

The regular meeting #795 of YTMC was held in Hatobakaika.

秋晴れのとても気持ちの良い気候の元、横浜トーストマスターズクラブ、796回目の例会が開催されました。

「今日のコトバ」担当のMHさん。ハローウィンシーズンに合わせて＜Confection＞という言葉を紹介してくださいました。

お菓子＝Sweets、としか使ったことが無かったので、新しい学びです！＜Confection = お菓子> 使ってみましょう♪

続いて、今日の司会者へバトンタッチ。ベテラン会員のYOさん。　

急遽欠員が出てしまったため、「Table Topic Master」も引き受けてくださいました。　あらゆるロールを、参加している会員全員でサポートしあうところも、トーストマスターでの学びであり、横浜クラブの素晴らしいところですね！

ベテラン会員のYOさん。　「スポーツの秋」にちなんで、スポーツに関するお題を出してくださいました。　

テーブルトピックス（即興スピーチ）は、苦手な会員が多いため、このセッションの時は皆さん緊張感が溢れています・・・

＜質問＞

2, あなたがオリンピック選手として出場するなら、どのスポーツを選びますか？

3, あなたが好きなアスリート、スポーツ選手は誰ですか？

続いては、例会のメインセッション「準備スピーチ」です。今回は4名の会員がスピーチをしました。

一人目のスピーカーはTMさん。

心温まるご家族のお話でした。子供の頃のご両親との関りのストーリーから、後半はお父様が痴呆症になり、家族のことご自身のことを忘れてしまったエピソードに移り、誰もが共感できる、そして学びの多いお話しでした。

二人目のスピーカーはNMさん。

2分弱の動画を交えて、とてもユニークなスピーチを披露していただきました。

1960年代,1970年代、1980年代の音楽を楽しもう！「YTMC Rock Band」というプロジェクトを新しく立ち上げるべく、

メンバー大募集♪とのことです。スピーチの中に沢山の素敵な音楽のエッセンスが含まれており、聴衆を楽しませてくれました。

三人目のスピーカーはRSさん。

「Understanding and Trying to Embrace Your Inner Photographer」という非常に興味深いスピーチタイトルでした。

ご自身がどやって自信を付けていくか、、、という課題に向き合うストーリーでありながら、聴衆への強いメッセージもある素晴らしいスピーチでした。

四人目のスピーカーはAHさん。

双子の男の子の妊娠～出産～その後現在の育児の大変さの体験談を、「Oh,No!」という感情を組み込み、とてもテンポよく、お話ししてくださいました。双子の妊娠はとても不安が多い中、Instagramで情報を集めたり、情報交換をしたり、コメントに励まされたりして、乗り切った、というリアルな体験談でした。笑いあり、感動ありの素敵なスピーチでした。

休憩を挟んで、後半は「準備スピーチ」に対する「論評セッション」です。トーストマスターズには先生がいません。会員同士でフィードバックをしあい学んでいきます。

今日の「総合論評」担当は、大ベテランのOKさんが担当されました。

・一人目の論評者TTさん、

流石！横浜クラブの大ベテラン。少し重みのあるストーリーだったからこそ「ジェスチャーや、声の強弱をつけるとより良くなると感じました」とプロジェクトに沿った的確なアドバイスをされていました。

・二人目の論評者AYさん

ストーリーや音楽を取り入れた内容はとてもよかったが、「ご自身の(音楽への)パッションをもう少し出せるともっと素敵なスピーチになると思う！」というとても愛のあるフィードバックが素晴らしかったです。

・三人目の論評者KHさん

プロジェクトに沿った的確なアドバイスをされていました。今までダイナミックなスピーチが多かったので、今日のは少し物足りなさ（遠慮があった）を感じた、という納得のアドバイスをされていました。

 

四人目の論評者SHさん

・本日初めての論評のチャレンジでありながら、大ベテランのスピーカーの論評でとても緊張された様子でした。

そんな中、しっかり事前にスピーカーと情報連携し、出来る限りの準備をして論評に挑んでいる姿に感銘を受けました！初の論評者の役割のチャレンジ、おめでとうございます！！

 

準備から片付けまで、出来るメンバーで協力的で運営していく！という気持ちが常にある、素晴らしい会員の皆様のおかげで、

今回もとてもスムーズな学びの多い例会となりました♪

そして・・・もちろんそのあとの懇親会も、いつも通りとっても盛り上がりました！　また次回の例会でお会いしましょう！

Under the pleasant autumn weather, the 796th meeting of the Yokohama Toastmasters Club was held.

MH, in charge of “Word of the Day,” introduced the word “Confection” in line with the Halloween season. Since I had only used the term “Sweets” to refer to confections, this was a new learning experience! Let’s try using “Confection = お菓子.”

Next, Today’s TMOD(Toastmaster of the Day) is one of the experience member, YO!!

He also took on the role of “Table Topic Master.” The mutual support among all participating members in handling various roles is one of the great aspects of learning in Toastmasters and is admirable in the Yokohama TM club!

YO presented sports-related topics in line with the theme of “Sports in Autumn.”

Since Table Topics (impromptu speeches) is challenging for many members, there was a sense of tension among everyone during this session.

The questions included:

1.What sports do you participate in?

2.If you were to participate in the Olympics as an athlete, which sport would you choose?

3.Who is your favorite athlete or sports player?

4.What is a sport you wouldn’t want to try?

5.What sports do you enjoy watching? Do you have any memorable games?

6.If you were to take on a new challenge, what sport would you choose?

Following the Table Topics session, the main session of the meeting was the “Prepared Speeches.”

Toda, 4 members delivered speeches.

The first speaker, TM, shared a heartwarming story about their family, touching on childhood memories with parents and later discussing the father’s struggle with dementia, providing a universally relatable and insightful narrative.

The second speaker, NM, delivered a unique speech incorporating a 2-minute video, inviting members to join the “YTMC Rock Band” project, exploring music from the 1960s to the 1980s. The speech contained delightful musical elements that entertained the audience.

The third speaker, RS, presented a fascinating speech titled “Understanding and Trying to Embrace Your Inner Photographer,” addressing the challenge of building confidence in photography. It was a compelling speech with a strong message for the audience.

The fourth speaker, AH, shared the challenging experience of pregnancy, childbirth, and the difficulties of raising twin boys, incorporating the emotion of “Oh, No!” The speech was fast-paced, humorous, and touching, providing a real-life account of navigating through the anxieties of twin pregnancy.

After a break, the second half featured a “Feedback Session” for the “Prepared Speeches.”

In Toastmasters, there are no teachers; members learn and support each other through feedback.

The “General Evaluator” for the day was one of the experienced member, OK.

The first evaluator, TT, provided precise advice aligned with the project, acknowledging the weight of the story and suggesting improvements in gestures and vocal dynamics.

The second evaluator, AY, praised the incorporation of storytelling and music while encouraging the speaker to express more passion for their music.

The third evaluator, KH, offered insightful feedback aligned with the project, noting a slight sense of inadequacy due to a departure from the dynamic speeches typically delivered by the speaker.

The fourth evaluator, SH, commended the first-time evaluator for the challenge and appreciated the thorough preparation and collaboration with the speaker.

From preparation to cleanup, the cooperative and supportive attitude of the capable members made the meeting smooth and educational.

Thanks to the wonderful members, the meeting was a great success.

Of course, the subsequent social gathering was lively too! Let’s meet again at the next meeting!

秋晴れの中、YTMC regular meeting #797が開催されました。

本例会では４名のゲストも参加され、活気が溢れる例会のスタートとなりました。

 

Word of the day はTM Tさんがご担当されました。形容詞の”Fine”を選んでいただきました。

Fineは様々な場面で使用できる便利な言葉ですのし、また、当日は秋晴れということもあり、センスが光る素晴らしいWODでした。

TMODはTM K.Rさん。

初めてのTMODということもあり若干緊張気味でしたが、事前準備が素晴らしく、スムーズに進行していただきました。

Table TopicsはTM Oが担当されました。

 

今回は実験的な試みとしてIPPONグランプリを模したTable Topicsを実施。

Tell me fine lie、Say something about this picture, What happens if I press all the buttons on your computers at once?など面白いお題ばかりで、いろんな意味で緊張感があったセッションになりました。回答された４名の方も難しいお題にも関わらず、素晴らしい回答ばかりでした。

 

Prepared speechは３名の方が行いました。

TM Nさんはmaintaining a toastmasters lifeと題して、英語を如何にして上達させていくかという観点からご自身の経験をベースにスピーチを行っていただきました。ヒアリングではTEDの活用やNHKニュースを使用したり、最近ではYouTubeを使用した勉強法など行っているなど、英語上達に向けて真摯に取り組んでいるTM HNの姿勢には感銘を受けました。

TM N.Sさんは mentors in my lifeと題してスピーチを行っていただきました。ビジネス上お会いした２名のメンターを通して得た教訓を、実際にご経験したプロジェクトをベースにスピーチいただきました。マネジメントスタイルにも様々ある中で、部下をサポートするマネジメントやダイバーシティな環境で聴く力を持ったマネージメントが必要など、様々な示唆に富んだスピーチあったと思います。また、最高のメンターは褒めて育ててくれる奥さんのTM T.Sであると語ってくださり、TM NSの人柄が伝わってくるスピーチでした。

 

TM Kさんは　How to become a good impromptu speaker?と題して、30分のパネルディスカッションを行いました。以前table topics向けのworkshopから学んだ内容に感銘を受け、YTMCから経験豊な３名をパネリストとして参加いただき、どのような考えでテーブルトピックスに挑んでいるのかディスカッションを行っていただきました。

パネルディスカッションの中では。TM Tからご自身の経験をベースに、ネガティブな事柄を含め失敗を気にせず、テーブルトピックスのお題に取り組んでいること。TM Oは自身の発言をレビューし、次に活かすこと、TM Aさんからは、本来テーブルトピックスは夕食などのテーブルで話す内容から派生しているので、カジュアルに考えて臨んだらいいなどのアドバイスを発言していた。また参加者も交えて活発な議論がなされ、TM KTさんのファシリテーション力が光るスピーチとなりました。

 

エバリュエーションはTM T.SをGEにお迎えして行いました。

1st evaluatorは TM Tさん。

多くの改善を行っていることを賞賛し、努力の成果もあり、英語力は改善していると賞賛し、同じ課題を抱えている方にとって、良い示唆があったのではないかとコメント。Evaluation sheetに沿ってエバリュエーションも行っていただき、理解がしやすい内容が良かった点とした一方、声のトーンにバリエーションを加えると更に魅力あるスピーチになると助言されていました。

2nd evaluatorはTM Nさん

メンターのエピソードから何を学んだかをうまく伝えられていたことを良い点として挙げてられ、改善点として声のバラティーに関して挙げられておられ、具体的な例も発表された内容に沿って実演されていたので、とても良い改善のやり方であると思いました。

 

3rd evaluatorは TM Aさん

エバリュエーションシートを早めにくれた点やタイムスケジュールなど、準備が素晴らしい点を挙げておられた。30分と長いスピーチにも関わらず時間が長く感じなかったのは、時間をうまく管理できていたからではないかとコメント。改善点として、PPTのビジュアルや感情を込めて伝えてくれたらもっと良くなるとコメント。

 

最後にGEからゲストへの感謝とTMODのマネージメントの良さや

Word of the day が季節に合っていて良かった点を挙げられていました。

TTのIPPONグランプリはおもしろっかったが、各スピーカーがもっと長く話せたらと改善点もコメントいただいた。

On a clear autumn day, YTMC regular meeting #797 was held. Four guests participated in this meeting, adding to the lively atmosphere.

The Word of the Day was presented by TM T-san, who chose the adjective “Fine.” “Fine” is a versatile word that can be used in various situations, and on that particular day with the clear autumn weather, it was a fantastic word choice.

The Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD) was TM K.R-san. Despite being the first time as TMOD, it seems like there was a slightly nervousness, but the excellent preparation led to a smooth and well-executed meeting.

Table Topics were conducted by TM O-san, who introduced an experimental approach with Table Topics inspired by the IPPON Grand Prix. The session included interesting topics such as “Tell me a fine lie,” “Say something about this picture,” and “What happens if I press all the buttons on your computers at once?” Despite the challenging topics, the four respondents provided excellent and impressive answers, adding tension to the session.

Three prepared speeches were delivered. TM N-san spoke on “Maintaining a Toastmasters Life,” sharing experiences based on improving English proficiency. The speech highlighted TM HN’s sincere efforts to enhance English skills, incorporating methods like using TED talks, NHK news, and recently studying with YouTube.

TM N.S-san delivered a speech titled “Mentors in My Life,” drawing lessons from two mentors encountered in business. The speech touched on various management styles, emphasizing the need for supportive management for subordinates and the importance of listening skills in a diverse environment. TM N.S also praised his wife, TM T.S, as the best mentor, showcasing his personality in the speech.

TM K-san conducted a 30-minute panel discussion titled “How to become a good impromptu speaker?” Inspired by a workshop on table topics, three experienced members from YTMC participated as panelists, discussing their approaches to table topics. The discussion included TM T’s experience of tackling table topics without worrying about failures, TM O’s practice of reviewing and applying her own statements, and TM A’s advice to approach table topics casually, considering their origin from dinner table conversations. Active discussions involving participants highlighted TM KT-san’s facilitation skills.

The evaluation session was led by TM T.S-san as the General Evaluator (GE).

The first evaluator, TM T-san, praised the improvements made, acknowledging the efforts and improvements in English proficiency. The evaluator suggested adding variation to the tone of voice for a more engaging speech.

The second evaluator, TM N-san, commended the effective communication of lessons learned from mentorship experiences, noting a specific improvement in vocal variety. The evaluator considered the inclusion of concrete examples and demonstrations as a very effective method of improvement.

The third evaluator, TM A-san, praised the early submission of the evaluation sheet and excellent preparation, noting the effective time management despite the lengthy speech. The evaluator suggested improving the speech further by incorporating visual elements and expressing emotions through the presentation.

In conclusion, the GE expressed gratitude to the guests, highlighted the excellent management of the TMOD, and appreciated the seasonally fitting Word of the Day. While enjoying the interesting IPPON Grand Prix in Table Topics, the suggestion for improvement was made that speakers could talk for a bit longer.

Finally, awards were presented, with TM A-san receiving Best Evaluator, TM O-san receiving Best Table Topics, and TM K-san receiving Best Prepared Speech.

In closing, thanks were extended to everyone for their wonderful speeches, and anticipation for the next meeting.
