”I’m from Yokohama, Japan”: The Hometown Club Behind My World Championship Journey

On the stage of the World Championship of Public Speaking Finals, in the interview after my speech, I was asked where I was from.
I said it with pride: “I’m from Yokohama, Japan.”
And when I was asked about my clubs, the first name I gave was Yokohama Toastmasters Club.

My name is Toshiki Tanaka. In 2026, I won the District 76 International Speech Contest and advanced through international rounds to become the first contestant from Japan ever to reach the World Championship Finals. For that contest, I represented another of my clubs. But Yokohama is my home town, the city where I live, and Yokohama Toastmasters Club is my home club in the truest sense of the word. Wherever I stand, this is where I am from.
 
 
 
The club that believed first
Every contestant needs skills. But before skills, you need people who believe you can go far, sometimes before you believe it yourself. For me, that was Yokohama Toastmasters Club.
From early in my journey, the members here told me I could go a long way. At every stage of the contest season, as I advanced from club to area, to division, to district, and then onto the world stage, this club celebrated like it was their own victory. Messages of encouragement kept arriving, not as formalities, but personally, member to member. That is the character of this club: warm, positive, family-like, with people who reach out to you as a person, not just as a fellow member.
When the Finals came, they went further than I could have imagined. Kikuchi-san, our former VP Public Relations, traveled all the way to Vancouver to cheer for me in person. Back home, the club organized a public viewing so members could watch the Finals stage live, together.
 
 
 
And then there was the teddy bear.
Before I left, the club gave me a teddy bear with a recording device inside, holding the voices of the members cheering for me. I fully intended to bring it to Vancouver. But when I opened it up and saw the batteries and wires inside, I had a sudden vision of airport security taking one look and pulling me aside. So the bear stayed home, and the cheers came with me anyway. I had heard them, and I carried them onto that stage. When I stood in front of the world, I was not standing alone. Yokohama was standing with me.
 
 
 
A club with history, and a future
Yokohama Toastmasters Club is one of the longest-standing clubs in Japan, and one of the strongest. It is a Smedley Distinguished Club, a recognition held by only six clubs in all of Japan. That standard is not maintained by luck. It comes from a culture where members show up for each other, week after week, year after year, the same culture I felt at every step of my journey.

第865回例会レポート/The 865th Regular Meeting Report

This day was a very special day – it was the day of TM T’s finals at the 2026 World Championship of Public Speaking, and the final meeting for our beloved member TM Q, who moved to a different country – the theme for this meeting was – Hawaii!

 

##Watch Party of the Championship

One of our members, TM T (“Champion”, as we call him) went to the finals – this means he won the Area contest, Division contest, District contest, Quarter final contest and the Semi final contest… wow. Just simply wow.

At YTMC, we gathered in the morning to watch this final contest live.

The contest started with the announcement “Good evening, Vancouver!” which brought such excitement.

The finals was full of amazing speeches – we laughed, cried, were thrilled, excited…

As a result, TM T missed out on a prize, but his speech, I believe, was one of the best speeches ever made.

During the meeting afterwards, we also made a short video call to Vancouver, to talk to TM T.

 

 

##Awards

One of our members completed a level 5 project, and was awarded a certificate.

YTMC, in the previous year, achieved the “Smedley Distinguished Club” and was awarded a memento from Area Director, TM I.

 

##Meeting theme: Hawaii

Today was TM Q’s first and last challenge as the TMOD.

And the theme she chose was – Hawaii!

I can’t convey to you accurately how fun the meeting was.

All the role takers wore a Hawaiian Lei, and some of us even wore Hawaiian-themed clothes.

The TMOD and the role takers acted as the cabin attendants of “Mahalo Airlines”

All the announcements from the TMOD resembled an airline announcement – this was so fun; I wish I could put up the recording.

 

##Table Topics

The Table Topics Master TM A came up with wonderful exciting Hawaii-themed topics.

  • Have you ever been to Hawaii? If yes, what is your favourite memory? If no, what would you like to do there?
  • How would you spend your time on the plane?
  • How would you enjoy your time at the hotel?
  • Who would you take with you to Hawaii and why?
  • If you could go to Hawaii right after this meeting, would you go or won’t you go?
  • Which would you choose in Hawaii: Relaxing on the beach, shopping or sightseeing?
  • If you could live in Hawaii for one month, what would your daily life look like?

Our President answered topic 4 – and he said he would take everyone in YTMC to Hawaii! I am looking forward to your invitation!

 

##Prepared speeches

We had four amazing speeches on this day.

  • TM M’s touching speech on her days as the president of YTMC.

TM M was the president for the last year. She talked about her story of when she was the president of YTMC. Her speech was full of unique phrases such as “My voice is loud but my heart is tiny.” She really talked “to” the audience, not only “in front of” the audience, which was impressive.

  • TM W’s inspiring speech on her experience with her mentors.

TM W’s speech was about her experience with her mentors. She had a lot of humor in her speech, which made the audience laugh. It was very funny how she convinced everyone that it is important to go drinking with other members after the meeting.

  • TM O’s dignified speech explaining the job of a sales representative.

TM O explained what a sales representative does – because his project told him to research and present an unfamiliar topic. He explained his topic very clearly. He used one of our members as an example, which was so funny. I loved his last message – “You can become a sales representative.”

  • TM O’s hilarious speech on his past suffering in his job.

TM O’s speech was a humorous speech, and everyone was laughing out loud throughout. I couldn’t believe it when his colleague started using dowsing to find missing goods – and actually found them! We burst into laughter in the scene where TM O cried out loud “God, this is too much!” in the rain.

 

##Evaluation

The evaluation session started with GE M totally in the role of captain of “Mahalo Airlines.”

Then followed evaluation by TM K, which suggested specifically possible improvement points. Then TM T.S evaluated TM W’s speech with a lot of playful teasing. Very fun. TM O’s speech was evaluated by TM F, who brilliantly played the role as a cabin crew. TM T evaluated TM O’s speech using a lot of aviatory phrases, which was totally playful and fun.

この日は特別な一日でした。8月22日は、TM Tの世界大会決勝の日であり、YTMCの愛されメンバーTM Qの最後の日でもありました（TM Q海外へ引っ越されることとなりました）。そして例会のテーマは、こちら：「ハワイ」でした！

 

##世界大会の同時視聴パーティー

YTMCのメンバー、TM T（ニックネーム「チャンピオン」）が世界大会に出場しました。これはつまり。エリアコンテスト、ディビジョンコンテスト、ディストリクトコンテスト、準々決勝、準決勝を全て勝ち上がったということです……。すごい。すごいしか出てきません。

決勝は、「こんばんはバンクーバー！」という一声で始まり、一気に興奮が高まりました。

決勝はすさまじく、素晴らしいスピーチが満載でした。

我々は見ていて、笑い、泣き、緊張に息を止め、胸を高鳴らせました。

結果としては、TM Tは受賞だけは逃しましたが、彼のスピーチは史上最高のスピーチのひとつだと思います！

この後の例会で、バンクーバーにいるTM Tとビデオ通話をすることも出来ました。

 

##各種表彰

メンバーの一人がレベル5のプロジェクトを完了し。表彰されました。

また、YTMCは前期「Smedley Distinguished Club」を達成し、エリアディレクターのTM I から記念品をいただきました！

 

##例会のテーマ「ハワイ🌴」

この日は、TM Qの最初で最後のTMODの日でした。

彼女が選んだテーマは――ハワイ🌴！

どんなに楽しい例会だったか、はっきりお伝えするのは難しいです。

役割をもったメンバーは全員ハワイアン・レイを身に着け、ハワイテーマの服装を着ているメンバーもいました（アロハシャツなど）。

TMODと役割を持つメンバーは「マハロ航空」のキャビン・クルーという設定で、TMODのアナウンスは全て飛行機のアナウンスを模していました。

本当に楽しくて、音源を載せたいくらいです（笑）。

 

##即興スピーチ

テーブルトピックスマスターであるTM Aはハワイをテーマに、素晴らしく楽しいお題を出題してくださいました。

  • ハワイには行ったことがありますか？あるなら、楽しかった思い出について、ないなら、ハワイでやってみたいことについて語ってください。
  • 飛行機での時間はどのように過ごしますか？
  • ホテルでの時間はどのように楽しみますか？
  • ハワイには誰を連れていきたいですか？
  • この例会の後すぐにハワイに行けると言われたら、行きますか？行きませんか？
  • ハワイでするならどれですか？ビーチでリラックス・ショッピング・観光。
  • ハワイに1か月住むことができるとしたら、どんな日常を送りますか？

お題4に答えたのは我らがプレジデントで、答えは、YTMCの全員（！）でした！ご招待楽しみにしております！！

 

##準備スピーチ

この日は4名のメンバーがすばらしいスピーチをしました。

  • TM MのYTMCプレジデントとしての日々を振り返った感動的なスピーチ

TM Mは前期のプレジデントで、その日々を語られました。とても記憶に残る、ユニークはフレーズが沢山あって素敵でした（「私は声は大きいけど心臓は小さいのです」など！）。観客に語り掛けるスタイルが印象的でした。

  • TM Wのメンターについてのやる気を起こさせるスピーチ

TM Wのスピーチは彼女のメンター（たち）との思いでを振り返ったものでした。ユーモアたっぷりで、観客はみんな笑わせられていました。とくに、例会のあとにみんなで飲みに行くのがとても大事なんだと真面目なトーンで観客を説得されていたのがとっても面白かったです。

  • TM OのSales representativeを解説した堂々としたスピーチ

TM OはSales representativeの仕事について解説してくださいました。スピーチプロジェクトの目的が。「馴染みの無いトピックについて調査し解説すること」だったんです。TM Oはとても明快な説明をされていました。時にはメンバーを例に出され――皆さん爆笑でした。最後のメッセージもとてもよかったです。「あなたもSales representativeになれる！」

  • TM Oの仕事上の苦悩についての爆笑スピーチ

TM Oのスピーチはユーモラス・スピーチで、観客はずっと笑いっぱなしでした。スピーチの中で、彼の同僚が無くなった物品を探すためにダウジングを始めたときなんて、爆笑必須でした。そして、その物品がみつかったのです！TM Oが雨の中、「神様、あんまりだ！」と叫ぶシーンなんかは、泣き笑いです。

 

##評価

評価セッションはGeneral EvaluatorであるTM Mの進行で始まりましたが、「マハロ航空のパイロット」という役になりきって実施してくださり、とても楽しかったです。続くTM Kは具体的な改善点を指摘していらっしゃり大変ためになる評価スピーチでした。次に、TM T.SがTM Wのスピーチを、愛あるからかいを含めながら評価していらっしゃり、とても楽しかったです。その後のTM Fは、TM Oのスピーチを、マハロ航空キャビン・クルーとして素晴らしく評価していらっしゃいました。最後の評価スピーチはTM Tで、TM Oのスピーチを航空系のフレーズをふんだんに交えながら評価していらっしゃり、遊び心があって楽しかったです。

第864回例会レポート/The 864th Regular Meeting Report

##Opening
Welcome to August! The scorching summer heat just keeps continuing I hope everyone is staying cool and taking good care of yourselves. Despite the blazing temperatures outside, the historic and elegant Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall was even hotter—filled with the energy and enthusiasm of our members and guests.

Then, right at 2:00 p.m.… With President HS’s powerful “Call to Order!”, the 864th regular meeting officially began! In his opening remarks, HS spoke about the terrible Kumamoto earthquake. As he is from Kyushu area, it was a relief to hear that his relatives were safe. He reminded us that “Preparation is really important.” Whether it’s disaster preparedness or preparing a Toastmasters speech, success always begins with good preparation.
Now, let’s take a look at today’s attendance. We welcomed a total of 30 participants, including 2 who joined us online. At the venue, we were delighted to have 24 members and 6 guests. Recently, YTMC has been attracting many guests, making every meeting more lively than ever.
In fact, we’ve heard that quite a few guests decided to visit us after reading these Website Reports. This role is truly important! It’s a lot of pressure for me! So, I’ll do my best to bring you all the excitement, smiles, and unique charm that make YTMC such a special club.
Let’s take a look at the highlights of today’s meeting!

## Word of the Day
Alright, it’s time to check today’s key word! Today’s Word of the Day is “Serene.”It means “calm,” “peaceful,” or “relaxed”. What a perfect match for today’s Meeting Theme, “Ring Ring!”. It beautifully reminds us of the refreshing and peaceful sound of a wind chime on a summer day. TM TM, thank you for choosing such a wonderful word! Great choice — and thank you!

## Here Comes Our TMOD!
Next up, let’s welcome today’s meeting conductor — TMOD Rookie TM MM! For our powerful and colorful Rookie MM, today was a very special day. It was her first time taking the TMOD role!
She opened the meeting with the sound of a wind chime. Ring Ring…. At that very moment, the entire room seemed to become a little cooler, filled with a refreshing summer breeze. …But wait! That was only the beginning! Rookie TM MM was just getting started. She brought her own powerful and energetic style to the stage and continued to lift the energy of the entire room.

## Table Topics Session!
After all role takers introduced their responsibilities, it was time to move on to our next exciting event. Yes, “the Table Topics Session!”. This is the time when speakers respond to unexpected questions and give an impromptu speech.
Leading today’s session was TM NQ, the winner of the Most Impactful Rookie Award! And this was also her debut as Table Topics Master! With her signature opening greeting, “Good day, everyone!” the session officially began! Dressed in a wonderful summer-themed costume, she brought us a series of fun summer questions. Her unique yet impactful facilitation was truly impressive.

① What is your favorite summer event, and why?
　→ Sumida River Fireworks Festival was amazing and beautiful, but scary, as if the fireworks were falling right above me. (TM TT)
②What are your favorite summer foods?
　→ Popsicles (Guest G)
③ What is your most memorable summer outdoor experience?
　→ A sunburn incident in Hawaii (TM YO)
④ Do you have a wind chime at home? If you do have one, please describe it. What do you like most about it? If not, would you like to have one? What kind of wind chime or sound would you like?
　→ It would be wonderful to hear the sound of a wind chime during my commute. (TM RK)
⑤ What sound reminds you of summer, and why?
　→ The sound of cicadas. When I was a child, I often caught cicadas. (TM AI)
⑥ If you could send any food down a bamboo slide like Nagashi-Somen, what would it be?
　→ Sushi! As I love sushi, I would like to create a “Nagashi Sushi” experience with a river of soy sauce. (TM HN)

　→ A “10-minute cooking challenge! I would like to enjoy Mexican dishes, such as Tacos with a mix of international flavors.(TM HA)

## Prepared Speech Session!
Now, it’s time to move on to today’s main stage — the Prepared Speech Session! This is one of the exciting session where members deliver speeches they have prepared in advance. And today, we had four speakers. Among them, two were fresh new members who joined YTMC just last month.

First up on stage was TM KI. This was his first Prepared Speech! He shared his own journey of learning English and personal growth — overcoming challenges in learning English and struggles at his companies — as he pursues his goal of becoming a “persuasive leader”. His speech delivered a powerful message: the challenges he takes on at YTMC will become the next important step in his growth.

Next on stage was our second rookie member, TM MS. She shared her journey of rediscovering herself as more than the roles of “mother” and “housewife,” and her decision to take on new challenges in order to continue growing. Her courage to open a door and take that first step truly touched audience’s heart.

Now, it’s time for two entertainers that YTMC is proud of! Our third speaker was TM KM. Inspired by the words of a friend, TM KM tackled a serious topic — the issue of suicide among young people in Japan. But this is TM KM! With his unique storytelling style, he delivered an important message in an unique and engaging way. There was laughter, there were moments that made us think deeply, and finally, he delivered a powerful message to young people: ”After all, life is shits, but …”. The thoughts and feelings behind these words left a strong and lasting impression on the audience.

And our fourth speaker was TM KY. He introduced Rodri as his man crush, the star football player in Spain, as an example, he explained a style of leadership that empowers others — being proactive while also respecting and supporting teammates. His exciting presentation involved the audience and created a truly energetic atmosphere. It was a powerful performance that perfectly represented TM KY’s unique style!

##Special Stage!
This time, our Speech Contest Japanese Champion, TM TT, delivered a practice speech for the upcoming International Speech Contest Semi-Final.
TM TT, all of us at YTMC are cheering for your continued success in the International Speech Contest!

## Evaluation Session!
After a short break to cool down, we moved on to the next session — the Evaluation Session! This is an important session where we reflect on the speeches and the entire meeting, share e positive points and areas for improvement, and turn those insights into the next step of our growth.
Leading this session was TM KO. He demonstrated a calm and confident style of facilitation that reflected his rich experience — truly the work of an experienced Toastmaster. The four Evaluators also shared their feedback from their own perspectives, highlighting each speaker’s strengths while providing constructive suggestions and practical advice for further improvement.

 

## Award Session!!
The meeting reached its climax with the Award Session, where we announced the No.1 performers in each category! And the proud recipients of today’s awards are――
・Best Table Topics Speaker → TM HN
・Best Evaluator → TM HO
・Best Prepared Speaker → TM KM

Congratulations to all the award winners for demonstrating outstanding speeches, insightful evaluations, and a strong spirit of challenge!

##Closing
Once again, it was a fantastic meeting filled with learning, laughter, and inspiration! The energy and enthusiasm from both members and guests created a truly memorable and exciting session.
And finally, let me introduce one of today’s stars. It was TM MM, who took on the role of TMOD for the first time. However, her calm and confident facilitation made it hard to believe that this was her first time as TMOD. It was truly a Great Job!!
Our next regular meeting will be held on Saturday, August 22. We look forward to another exciting meeting filled with learning, laughter, and new connections! All guests are warmly welcome, and we sincerely look forward to seeing you there!

さあ、8月がスタート！ 連日の猛暑、いや酷暑…。皆さん、夏バテしていませんか？そんな灼熱の一日でしたが、定例会の会場となった歴史と品格あふれる開港記念会館は、参加者の熱気でさらにヒートアップ！暑さに負けないエネルギーが会場いっぱいに広がっていました。
そして午後2時ちょうど――。 President HSの力強い「Call to Order!」の一声で、第864回定例会が華やかに開幕！オープニングでは、HSから熊本地震のお話がありました。彼は九州出身ということもあり、ご親族がご無事だったと伺い、ほっと一安心。「備えが何より大切だ」ということを、HSが私たちに改めて教えてくれました。防災も、Toastmastersのスピーチも、やっぱり準備が成功へのカギですね。

さて、本日の参加者は30名。そのうち2名はオンライン参加、会場には24名のメンバーと6名のゲストが集まりました！ 最近のYTMCは、毎回たくさんのゲストにお越しいただき、会場はますます活気いっぱい！

##TMOD(Toastmaster of the Day)登場！
続いて登場するのは、本日の司会進行役、TMOD Rookie MM！パワフルでカラフルな彼女にとって、本日は記念すべきTMODデビュー戦です！
スタートは、なんと風鈴の音色から。チリン、チリン……。その瞬間、会場全体が少し涼しくなったような、そんな爽やかな空気に包まれました。……しかし！ ここからがRookie MMの本領発揮！涼しさだけでは終わりません。彼女らしいパワフルでエネルギッシュな進行で、会場をどんどん盛り上げていきました。

各ロール担当から役割説明が終わったところで、次のコーナーへ移ります。そう、エキサイティングな Table Topics Session！突然のお題に、その場で答える即興スピーチの時間です。
今回このセッションをリードするのは、Most Impactful Rookie Award受賞者のTM NQ！実は彼女にとっても、Table Topics Masterとしてのデビュー戦でした！おなじみのオープニングコール、「ごきげんよう、みなさん！」の一言で、いよいよセッションスタート！ 夏らしいコスチュームで登場し、夏をテーマにした質問を次々と展開。ユニークでかつ、インパクトのある進行は見事でした。

## Prepared Speech Session！
さあ、ここからは本日のメインステージPrepared Speech Sessionへ！事前に準備したスピーチを披露する、YTMCのメインセッションです。今回のスピーカーは、なんと4名！そして、そのうち2名は今月入会したばかりのフレッシュな新人メンバーです。

まずステージに登場したのは、TM KI。 今回が彼にとって初めてのPrepared Speech！英語学習への挑戦、そして職場での葛藤を乗り越えながら、「説得力を持つリーダー」を目指す自身の歩みを語ってくれました。そして、YTMCでの挑戦こそが、彼にとって次の一歩になる――。そんな力強いメッセージが込められたスピーチでした。

続いて登場したのは、2人目の新人メンバー、TM MS。「母親」「主婦」という役割だけではない、自分自身との再会。そして、成長するために新たな一歩を踏み出す決意とチャレンジについて語ってくれました。勇気を持って新しい扉を開いた彼女の姿は、聴衆の心に響いたことでしょう。

ここからは、YTMCが誇る2人のエンターテイナーの登場です！
3人目のスピーカーは、TM KM。友人の言葉をきっかけに、日本の若者が抱える孤独や自殺問題というシリアスなテーマに向き合いました。しかし、そこはTM KM！ 彼らしいユーモアと独特の語り口で、会場を引き込みました。笑いあり、考えさせられる場面あり。そして最後に届けた、若者への力強いメッセージ―― 「人生は最低だ、でも……」。この言葉に込められた彼の想いは、聴衆の心に強く残りました。

そして4人目のスピーカーは、TM KY。サッカー界のスター選手、ロドリ選手を例に挙げ、周囲を輝かせる、主体的でありながら他者を尊重するリーダーシップについて解説しました。会場を巻き込みながら展開される、エキサイティングなスピーチ。まさにTM KYらしい、エネルギーあふれるステージでした！

今回は、スピーチコンテスト日本チャンピオン、TM TTが、インターナショナルセミファイナルコンテストに向けた練習スピーチを披露。

## Evaluation Session！
さて、休憩を挟んで少しクールダウンしてスタートしたのは、Evaluation Session！スピーチや例会全体を振り返り、良かった点や改善点を共有し、次の成長につなげる大切なセッションです。
今回、このセッションをリードしたのは TM KO。4名のSpeech Evaluatorをまとめながら、落ち着きと豊富な経験を感じさせる、まさにベテランらしい安定した進行を披露しました。そして4名のEvaluatorも、それぞれの視点からスピーカーの素晴らしかったポイントを紹介し、さらに成長につながる改善点や具体的なアドバイスを共有しました。

## Award Session!!
さあ、いよいよ例会のクライマックス！会場が注目する中、各カテゴリーのNo.1を発表する Award Sessionの時間です！
今回の栄えある受賞者は――
・Best Table Topics Speaker → TM HN
・Best Evaluator → TM HO
・Best Prepared Speaker → TM KM

素晴らしいスピーチ、的確な評価、そして熱いチャレンジ精神を披露された受賞者の皆さん、本当におめでとうございます！

# Closing
今回も、学びあり！笑いあり！そして感動あり！メンバーとゲストの熱気に包まれた、充実した定例会となりました。
そして最後に、今回の主役の一人をご紹介しましょう。初めてTMOD（司会進行）を務めた TM MM。しかし、そんな「初めて」を感じさせない、落ち着きと安定感あふれるパワフルなファシリテーション会場全体を見事にリードし、まさに “Great Job!!” の一言でした！

次回の定例会は 8月22日（土）。次回も、学びあり！笑いあり！新たな出会いあり！さらにパワーアップした例会になること間違いなしです！ゲストの皆さんのご参加を、メンバー一同、心よりお待ちしております！

価値観と共感を大事にするスピーチ作り

今年度の研修は、コンテストスピーチの極意を学ぶため、
D76のコンテストで過去３回の優勝経験を誇るDTM東さんをお迎えし、
「価値観と共感を大事にするスピーチ作り」と題したワークショップを開催しました。
当日は、クラブのメンバーを含め全国から25人の参加がありました。
研修は、東さんの穏やかな語りに始まり、コンテストスピーチの極意へと進みます。
事前の課題として参加者はライフラインチャートを作成し自分の過去を振り返ります。
そこから価値観と共感を得る要素を発見し、ＡＢＣ理論を参考に観客を引き付けるスピーチを構成していきます。
論理的でわかりやすい説明に参加者は魅了されるとともに、来年のコンテストに向けてスピーチづくりの意欲を搔き立てられました。
講師の東さんに心から感謝します。

This year’s workshop was to learn the secrets of contest speeches.
We invited DTM Azuma, a three-time winner of the D76 contest, as our lecturer, and held a workshop entitled “Making Speeches that Embrace Values and Empathy.”
Twenty-five people from all over Japan, including Yokohama TMC members, participated in it.

The training begins with Mr. Azuma’s gentle narrative and progresses to the secrets of the contest speeches.
As a preliminary task, participants created a lifeline chart of themselves and looked back on their past.
From there, we discovered the elements that gain common values and empathy and constructed a speech that attracts the audience with the help of the ABC theory.
Participants were fascinated by the theoretical and easy-to-understand explanations and motivated to make speeches for the next year’s contest.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude toward Mr.Azuma, the lecturer of the workshop.

新人トーストマスターKさんの例会レポート③

新人トーストマスターKさんのレポート3回目です。

 

トーストマスターズではクラブ会員が持ち回りで役割を担当します。 今回、私は”Word of the Day” (今日の言葉）を担当しました。 その日の例会で意識して使ってもらう言葉をお題としてだします！

今回選んだ単語は”build”でした。日本語で「建てる 」、「構築する」などの意味です。建物だけでなく、目に見えないものを確立するときにも使える単語です。 私は、この単語を参加者の方々が何回使ったかを数えて報告する役割でした。

比較的スピーチに取り入れやすいかな？と思ったのですが、Table Topicのお題がトーストマスターズでの経験であったり、準備スピーチにアドリブでこうした単語を入れ込むのがむずかしかったのか、結果としてあまり使ってもらえなかったです。。。聞き逃したかもしれません。。。

単語の使用回数をチェックしながらスピーチの内容を理解してフィードバックの紙を書くのは意外と難しかったです。 次回は皆さんにもっと使ってもらえる言葉を選んでみたいと思います！ （了

新人トーストマスターKさんの例会レポートその②です。

Kさんは映画やテレビで字幕翻訳をされている方です。

 

2020/9/5

今回はTable Topics Bootcampということで即興スピーチの集中練習会でした。

どんなお題がでるかはその瞬間までわからないドキドキMaxな企画でした。

 

与えられたお題についてその場で構成を考えて皆さんの前でスピーチするというのは母国語でも相当難易度が高いチャレンジです。 しかもこれを英語でやるということで、事前にできることといえば「よく寝てくる！」ことくらいでした！

字幕制作の作業スピードはプロでも「作業時間1日で仕上げられる映像の長さは10分」という時間軸なのですが、即興スピーチは2分のスピーチをほぼ0秒で準備するという、全く正反対のアウトプットの仕方で、どれだけ慣れない作業なのか想像していただけるかと思います（苦笑）

 

自分が詳しくて何をいうのかパッと思い浮かぶお題ならまだよかったのですが、今回は自分にとってそのまま答えるのが難しい質問でした。。。準備0秒で皆さんの前で話せるわけもなく、「ええーーーっと・・・」と言いまくりな残念なスピーチををしてしましました。。。

すごく凹んでしまいましたが、「そのまま答えるのが難しければ、違う切り口でスピーチしても全然かまわないのですよ！」とアドバイスをいただきました。 なるほど！お題に対して真面目に答えようとしていたのですが、そういう考え方もあるのかと目から鱗がおちた感じがしました。

 

字幕翻訳者の業界は、「翻訳はできるけど英語は話せません」という人も多い中、「最初からうまくできなかったからダメだー！」ではなく、度胸をつける機会になったし、英語で即興スピーチをこれから向上させられる伸びしろを感じられた機会でした！

 

ということで今回はバンジージャンプをするより度胸がついたんじゃないかと思いました！ （バンジージャンプをしたとは言ってない つぎ当てられたら少しでも上手くなったねと言われるように頑張りたいです！！！

新人トーストマスターKさんの例会レポート①

先月弊クラブに入会してくださったKさんの感想をご紹介します。

ゲストや入会をご検討されている方の一助となれば幸いです。

初回は入会後に皆さんが経験するPrepared speech (準備スピーチ）です。

 

2020/8/15

入会して最初のスピーチは”Ice Breaker”、つまり自己紹介のスピーチをしました。

「みんなと早く仲良くなりたい、まずは自分から自己開示しよう！」と思い、人生のターニングポイントとなったことを話しました。

原稿も準備し、事前練習も念入りにしました。 実際に例会が始まったら、「練習した時よりゆっくり話さないと伝わらない気がする！」と感じて、本番ではゆっくりと話しました。 さて結果は。。。？

ゆっくり話したことで4-6分という与えられた時間はあっという間に過ぎ、用意した内容をすべて話すことはできませんでした。。。

しかし、スピーチを聞いてくださった皆さんから、”Nice Smile!”, “I could understand well (よくわかるよ）”とか、”It was very touching（とても心に響いたよ）”とコメントをいただきました。

 

そして、ゆっくり話して時間内に話し終えるための構成についてのアドバイスもいただきました。

トーストマスターズの批評（Evaluation）では、できなかった点ばかりグサグサさされるような痛い怖いフィードバックではなく、むしろ自分では意識していなかった点を長所として発見してもらえました。

 

YTMCの方々のEvaluationは的確であったかいと感じました。 自分だけでなく、他人も成長する喜びやドキドキ感を味わいたい方にはトーストマスターズはすごくオススメです！
