The regular meeting #795 of YTMC was held in the building “Sakuragicho Pio City” since Hatoba Kaikan, our home venue, was under the electric maintenance. It started a few minutes later than the schedule due to some technical hitches (sound trouble).
The Word of the Day was introduced by a first-time WOD master, TM N, who presented us an easy-to-use adjective “brilliant”, and many members used it during the meeting.
Different from our usual meetings, we had no guests in this meeting, but it was a fruitful meeting as usual.
Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD) was one of our experienced members, TM A, who introduced the seasonal Tanka (Japanese poem), which was about the arrival of autumn, to set the tone and color of the meeting. She shared with us some members’ answers to the meeting theme, which was autumn, and my favorite answer was TM M’s, which was as follows, “I feel the arrival of autumn when Yoshinoya starts to offer raw eggs as their side menu”.
Table Topics Session was facilitated by TM K, who gave us random questions asking about our preferences. His instruction at the beginning of the session was “brilliant”. He instructed us to speak till we see the red flag at least, meaning we should take advantage of the situation and speak as long as possible (time limit is 2.5 min.). His instruction worked and every speaker spoke longer than 2 minutes. Congratulations!
As for the questions, they went like these, “What do you do first when you wake up?” The answer to this question was terrific. TM N answered, “I check if my dog is dead or alive first thing in the morning.” TM O answered “Let’s enjoy silence while I come up with the answer” to the second question “Which part of your body do you wash first when you take a bath?”. Other questions were “Which do you like better, taking a bath or a shower?”, “What kind of payment method do you like, cash? Credit card? Etc?”, and more.
In the Prepared Speech Session, four ‘brilliant’ speakers presented their unique speeches. The first speaker, TM T, talked about her communication style by sharing with us the episode with her two older sisters. The second speaker was a fan of Steve Job’s famous speech that includes the renowned phrase, “Stay hungry, stay foolish”, and talked about the chance encounters in his life, the U.S. sitcom “Full House” and Oscar Peterson’s CD, were two individual dots that made him study English. The third speaker, TM T, shared with us the story of how he utilizes his leadership skills to raise and nurture his baby girl at home. The fourth and last speaker, TM M’s speech title was “How can I forget about you: Mechanism of memory”. In his speech, he explained how our memory works. I learned that there are two types of memory, one is semantic memory and the other is episode memory. However, what impressed me most was that his episode memory was very clear and he remembered who and how and where he was dumped exactly when he was a junior-high school student whereas I can’t even remember who I fell in love with for the first time in my life!
The Evaluation Session was facilitated smoothly by TM N, and four great evaluators presented their unique evaluations. First evaluator, TM S, made a good suggestion to TM T’s speech to use her vocal variety when presenting dialogues with her sisters. The evaluation by the 2nd evaluator, TM T, was crisp and the third evaluation was given by TM O, who said the speech title was too ordinary. The last evaluator elaborated and said she felt as though she was listening to the lecture from a professor, BUT it was FAR FROM boring, ha ha!
In the award presentation, TM O received both Best Table Topics Speaker & Best Evaluator awards, and the Best Prepared Speaker Award was given to TM M, who educated us with his knowledge of human memories.
Overall, today’s meeting was another successful and fruitful one, and I’ll be looking forward to attending the next meeting of YTMC soon!
#795 YTMC 通常例会レポート（2023年10月7日）
YTMCの#795通常例会は、ホーム会場である波止場会館が電気設備メンテナンスのため使用不可とのことで、代わりに「桜木町ピオシティ」で開催されました。例会は、技術的なトラブル（音声障害）により、予定より数分遅れて始まりました。 今回のWord of the Dayは、初めてのWODマスターであるTM Nによる紹介。万人が使いやすい形容詞「素晴らしい/brilliant」という言葉が提示され、多くのメンバーが例会中に使用することができました。通常の例会とは異なり、今回はゲストが一人もいませんでしたが、いつも通り実りある会合となりました。本日のトーストマスター（TMOD）は、経験豊富なメンバーであるTM Aで、冒頭で秋の訪れについての季節の短歌を紹介し、会合の雰囲気を一気に秋色に染めました。彼女は例会テーマである秋についてのメンバーの回答を共有してくれましたが、私の一番のお気に入りはTM Mの「私は吉野家がサイドメニューに生卵を出し始めたら、秋の訪れを感じます」という回答でした。
テーブルトピックセッションはTM Kによる進行で、内容は、私たちの好みについてのランダム質問でした。彼がセッションの冒頭で行った指示が素晴らしく、それは赤い旗が見えるまでは最低話そう、というものでした（制限時間は2.5分）。その効果的な指示により、全スピーカーが2分以上話すことができました。おめでとうございます！「朝起きたら最初に何をしますか？」という質問に対する答えが最高で、TM Nは、「私は毎朝必ず、愛犬が生きているかどうかをチェックします」と答えました。TM Oは、「お風呂に入るとき、体のどの部分から洗いますか？」という質問に対して、「私が答えを考えている間、どうか静寂を楽しんでください」とまず答えました。他の質問は、「お風呂とシャワー、どちらが好きですか？」や、「どの支払い方法が好きですか？現金？クレジットカード？その他？」などでした。
準備スピーチセッションでは、4人の素晴らしいスピーカーが独自のスピーチをそれぞれ披露しました。最初のスピーカー、TM Tは、姉妹たちとのエピソードを共有しながら、自身のコミュニケーションスタイルについて話しました。2番目のスピーカーTM Sは、スティーブ・ジョブズの有名なスピーチのファンで、特に 「Stay hungry, stay foolish」という部分が気に入っており、彼の人生における一見無関係の偶然の出会い、アメリカのシットコム「フルハウス」、オスカー・ピーターソンのCDといった「ドット」が、彼に後日英語の勉強をさせた、という話をしました。3番目のスピーカー、TM Tは、自身のリーダーシップスキルを活かして娘を育てている、というエピソードを共有してくれました。4番目で最後のスピーカー、TM Mのスピーチのタイトルは「あなたを忘れるなんてできない：記憶の仕組み」でした。彼は自身のスピーチの中で、私たちの記憶がどのように機能するかを説明してくれ、彼のスピーチから、記憶には意味記憶とエピソード記憶の2つのタイプがあることを学びました。しかし、私にとって最も印象的だったのは、彼のエピソード記憶が非常に鮮明で、彼が中学生の時に、如何にして、誰に、どこで、どのように振られたのかを細部にわたり鮮明に覚えているということでした。私なんて初恋の相手すら思い出せないくらいなのに！
論評セッションはTM Nによってスムーズに進行され、4人の優れた論評者が独自の評価を行いました。第1論評者であるTM Sは、TM Tが姉妹との対話を行う際に声の変化をもっと活用すればよかった、という提案をしました。2番目の論評は簡潔でキビキビしており、3番目の論評は、スピーチのタイトルがあまりにも普通すぎると指摘しました。最後の論評者の説明は詳細で、教授の講義を聞いているような気分になったが、まったく退屈しなかったと述べました (笑)。 表彰式では、TM Oがベストテーブルトピックススピーカー賞とベスト論評者賞の両方をW受賞し、ベスト準備スピーチ賞は、人間の記憶に関する知識で私たちに教育機会を提供してくれたTM Mに贈られました。 全体として、本日も素晴らしく実りある例会となりました。また、次回のYTMCの会合を楽しみにしています！
