The 867th Regular Meeting Report

Pocket

On the first day of Silver Week, the second regular meeting of September was held at the Hatoba Kaikan.
With a holiday mood in the air, the venue was filled with even more energy than usual.

Today’s TMOD was TM MT, who recently completed a renovation at home — and so today’s meeting proceeded under the theme “Reform.”

Next, TM EF introduced today’s Word of the Day: “Revamp,” meaning “to give something a new, more modern look.” A perfect match for today’s theme!

Table Topics Session

Led by TM TS, the Table Topics Session kicked off with a wonderfully diverse set of answers.

Q1. If you could improve one habit, what would it be? — TM KI

  • Cutting back on drinking at night to improve sleep quality.

Q2. If you could go back in time and change something, what would it be? — TM HN

  • Going back to high school and studying and playing sports harder to get into a better university.

Q3. If you could change one rule at your workplace, what would it be? — TM TU

  • My office is already a fairly free and flexible place to work, so there’s nothing in particular I’d change.(What a wonderful environment!)

Q4. What would you like to improve about education in Japan? — TM AT

  • TM AT shared a wish to change the way teachers work.

Q5. Which part of your home would you like to renovate? — TM TM

  • The bedroom. A place to relax and feel safe, where I spend a lot of time.

Q6. What would you like to improve in world politics? — TM MK

  • Improving women’s rights and quality of life.

Q7. If you could change the Social Security System, what would you change? — TM TT

  • Real estate prices in Japan keep rising, making it harder for young people to buy a home. TM TT hopes the government will support access to housing at fair prices.

Prepared Speech Session

Now it’s time for today’s main stage — the Prepared Speech Session.

1. TM HA: “You are not here.” Words she was once told in the past — her body was present, but her heart was somewhere else. Now living a life chased by housework, she heard the very same words from her own child, and it made her rethink her daily life. She shared concrete steps she took using a time-tracking app and ChatGPT, along with the shift in mindset that followed — all told with a great sense of humor. The way the same words, “You are not here,” took on a different meaning over time, and how that shaped her own actions, made for a truly memorable speech.

2. TM HA: This session took the form of a panel discussion together with TM NS and TM YO. Both with rich overseas experience, they shared how they adapted to cultural differences between Japan and abroad, drawing on their own stories. One thing they had in common: taking initiative. They shared comments such as ”I always make sure to speak up at least once in every meeting I attend.” and “I joined a company with no onboarding training, no assigned tasks, and no manual whatsoever.” The way the discussion drew in not just the panelists but the whole audience was impressive.

3. TM AI: Speaking from experience both as a Toastmaster and as a teacher, he talked about the challenge of evaluation — and how he evaluates his students. He shared three key points: Give feedback immediately, Offer concrete ways to improve and Build self-esteem. These, he noted, overlap closely with the spirit of Evaluation in Toastmasters.
He had originally planned to meet with his Evaluator, ahead of time, but an unexpected situation made that impossible before the meeting — so he had to revise his slides at the last minute. Opening his speech by turning that very story into a joke was a great display of quick thinking.

Evaluation Session

Led by TM TO, TM YO, TM EW, and TM RK each delivered their evaluations, each one sharply highlighting Good Points and areas for improvement. TM TO then wrapped up the session with thoughtful feedback for every speaker.

Award Session

Today’s award winners are:

  • Best Table Topics Speaker → TM KI
  • Best Evaluator → TM RK
  • Best Prepared Speaker → TM HA

Congratulations to all!

Finally, TM AT made an announcement. Since club membership grows, a new initiative called the “What’s Up Session” will be introduced starting with the next meeting, with the aim of providing more opportunities for members to speak during meetings. Thank you, as always, to our culb officers for continually reshaping our meetings to fit every situation. We truly appreciate it.

続いて、TM EFから本日のWord of the Dayが発表されました。選ばれた言葉は「Revamp(刷新する)」。

— TM AT

1. TM HA: 「You are not here.」 かつてと今とで「You are not here.」

The 866th Regular Meeting Report

Pocket

The first meeting of September was held at Hatoba Kaikan in Yamashita-cho, Yokohama, under cloudy skies, with four guests joining us.

At the beginning of the meeting, Club President TM HS welcomed TM TT back and congratulated him on participating in the semifinal round of the World Championship of Public Speaking in Vancouver, Canada, last month. The meeting began in a warm and celebratory atmosphere.

Next, we held an Induction Ceremony for three new members who officially joined our club today. A very warm welcome to all of our new members! We are delighted to have three of you with us.

If our membership continues to grow at this pace, we may need an even larger meeting room in the near future!!

After that, TM TS introduced the Word of the Day, “infinite,” and handed the meeting over to TM TT, our Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD).

The theme of today’s meeting was “Beyond the Finish Line.”

<Table Topics>

Our Table Topics Master, TM MT, prepared a game that was a little different from our usual Table Topics session.

Inspired by the Japanese proverb “If the wind blows, the barrel maker makes a profit,” the idea was to create a chain-reaction story in which seemingly unrelated events are connected one after another.

Here is how the game worked:

  1. The Table Topics Master gave only one question or challenge.
  2. The first challenger created a story based on the question.
  3. The next challenger continued the story, building on what the previous speaker had said.
  4. Finally, the Table Topics Master read the opening sentence and the final sentence together.

Who knows? We might even create the first-ever proverb of Yokohama Toastmasters Club!

The challenge was:

“If TM MT catches a cold…”

  1. TM YA
TM TT, a member of YTMC, visited TM MT at home to see how he was doing. As a result, TM TT caught a cold, too!
  2. TM TU
Then, a large number of doctors rushed to TM TT’s house, and all the medicine in Japan suddenly disappeared!
  3. TM KT
Fortunately, thanks to the doctors’ dedicated treatment and their infinite support, TM TT made a full recovery.
  4. TM MT
Finally, everyone sang Queen’s famous song, “We Are the Champions,” together.

And they all lived happily ever after!

And with that, the game came to an end.

Although this was our first attempt at this kind of game, it created many hilarious moments, and the room was filled with laughter. It turned out to be a very fun and memorable Table Topics session.

Next, TM JI gave a speech related to our meeting theme, “Beyond the Finish Line.” He shared a story about injuring himself while jumping during basketball practice when he was a student, but continuing to work hard toward his next goal despite the setback.

<Prepared Speeches>

Three speakers then delivered speeches on a variety of interesting topics.

  1. TM RK

TM RK was invited to Vancouver by his friend, TM TT, who had participated in the World Championship of Public Speaking.

When TM TT asked, “Why don’t you come to Vancouver?”, TM RK decided to go. He used his airline miles, which were about to expire, to purchase his ticket and paid for his own accommodation.

He also experienced an unexpected situation at the airport, where he was asked detailed questions about the purpose of his visit.

Despite the unexpected challenges, he made the journey all the way to Vancouver to support his friend. It was a heartwarming story of friendship and support.

  1. TM NS

TM NS usually enjoys walking while listening to English news every day.

One day, however, he decided to stop listening to the news while walking. As a result, he began to notice many things that he had never paid attention to before.

He saw puppies and children walking along the curb, discovered stingrays swimming in the river, and looked up to notice the moon in the sky.

His speech reminded us that even an activity we do every day can become a completely different experience when we change the way we do it.

It was a wonderful speech about discovering the world around us with fresh eyes.

  1. TM HS

We tend to judge things based on our first impressions. However, when we look at something from different angles, something that initially seems cheap or ordinary may suddenly appear attractive and special.

During the speech, TM HS introduced a hit song by Japanese singer Kohmi Hirose and showed how the same person can look completely different in a skiing environment.

Then came the “Blue Cup.”

The conclusion was simple:

If we change the way we look at the Blue Cup, it can become a wonderful drink!

With plenty of humor, this entertaining speech reminded us of the importance of looking at things from different perspectives.

<Evaluation Session>

The Evaluation Session was led by TM HO.

In the individual evaluations, TM KY, TM KO, and TM MM each provided warm, thoughtful, and insightful feedback to the speakers.

Their comments will surely help the speakers continue to improve their future speeches.

Congratulations to today’s winners! TM KT won the Table Topics, and TM HS won the Prepared Speech! The meeting came to a close with Club President TM HS’s closing remarks.

Once again, it was a wonderful and rewarding meeting, filled with laughter, learning, and opportunities to speak. Almost everyone had a chance to participate and express themselves.

Thank you very much to everyone who joined us today!

And a special thank-you to all our guests.
We hope to see you again at Yokohama Toastmasters Club!

Word of the Day「infinite」を紹介し、TMOD(Toastmaster of the Day)のTM TTへ進行が引き継がれました。

  4. TM MT
最後は、Queenの名曲 “We Are the Champions” をみんなで大合唱!

  1. TM RK

友人であり、トーストマスターズ世界大会に出場したTM TTから、「Why don’t you come to Vancouver?」

”I’m from Yokohama, Japan”: The Hometown Club Behind My World Championship Journey

Pocket

On the stage of the World Championship of Public Speaking Finals, in the interview after my speech, I was asked where I was from.
I said it with pride: “I’m from Yokohama, Japan.”
And when I was asked about my clubs, the first name I gave was Yokohama Toastmasters Club.

My name is Toshiki Tanaka. In 2026, I won the District 76 International Speech Contest and advanced through international rounds to become the first contestant from Japan ever to reach the World Championship Finals. For that contest, I represented another of my clubs. But Yokohama is my home town, the city where I live, and Yokohama Toastmasters Club is my home club in the truest sense of the word. Wherever I stand, this is where I am from.

The club that believed first
Every contestant needs skills. But before skills, you need people who believe you can go far, sometimes before you believe it yourself. For me, that was Yokohama Toastmasters Club.
From early in my journey, the members here told me I could go a long way. At every stage of the contest season, as I advanced from club to area, to division, to district, and then onto the world stage, this club celebrated like it was their own victory. Messages of encouragement kept arriving, not as formalities, but personally, member to member. That is the character of this club: warm, positive, family-like, with people who reach out to you as a person, not just as a fellow member.
When the Finals came, they went further than I could have imagined. Kikuchi-san, our former VP Public Relations, traveled all the way to Vancouver to cheer for me in person. Back home, the club organized a public viewing so members could watch the Finals stage live, together.

And then there was the teddy bear.
Before I left, the club gave me a teddy bear with a recording device inside, holding the voices of the members cheering for me. I fully intended to bring it to Vancouver. But when I opened it up and saw the batteries and wires inside, I had a sudden vision of airport security taking one look and pulling me aside. So the bear stayed home, and the cheers came with me anyway. I had heard them, and I carried them onto that stage. When I stood in front of the world, I was not standing alone. Yokohama was standing with me.

A club with history, and a future
Yokohama Toastmasters Club is one of the longest-standing clubs in Japan, and one of the strongest. It is a Smedley Distinguished Club, a recognition held by only six clubs in all of Japan. That standard is not maintained by luck. It comes from a culture where members show up for each other, week after week, year after year, the same culture I felt at every step of my journey.

Come find your home stage
If you live in or around Yokohama and have ever thought about becoming a better speaker, a better leader, or simply a more confident version of yourself, I can tell you from experience: it matters enormously who is in the room with you.
Come visit us. You will see what I mean within one meeting.
