横浜の景色とともに学びと交流を楽しんだ、3月21日の例会
3月21日の横浜トーストマスターズ例会は、定刻どおりにスタートしました。会場は横浜港を一望できる部屋。快晴の空とすばらしい景色が広がり、参加者の気分も自然と高まる 、気持ちのよい例会となりました。今回はゲスト2名を迎え、そのうち1名は元メンバー。終始あたたかく、活気ある雰囲気に包まれていました。
この日のミーティングテーマは “Top 3 of Something”。Toastmaster of the DayのNMさんが、「3月21日＝3, 2, 1 とカウントダウンになる日」にちなんで紹介し、会場を盛り上げました。ロール紹介でも、それぞれが自分の“Top 3”を紹介し合い、楽しいスタートになりました。Word of the Day は “considerably / considerable” で、語源まで紹介されるという、横浜トーストマスターズらしい知的なひとときもありました。
Table Topics Session（即興スピーチ）では、初担当のMOさんが卒業式をテーマにした質問を用意。思い出に残る卒業式、突然マイクを渡されたら何を話すか、卒業式のヒーローになるなら何のヒーローか、校長先生が突然踊り出したらどうするか――といったユニークなお題に、参加者がその場で楽しく答えました。会場には笑いがあふれ、即興ならではの面白さが感じられました。
Prepared Speech Session（準備スピーチ）では、4本の個性豊かなスピーチが披露されました。
MOさんは、かつて部下に高圧的に接していた自分を振り返り、相手の理由を聞くことで関係を改善できた経験を語りました。
QUさんは、英語の歌を“それらしく”歌うコツを楽しく紹介し、会場全体を巻き込んで実際に歌う、参加型の楽しいスピーチを届けてくれました。
SNさんは「Birthday Paradox」をテーマに、約30人集まれば同じ誕生日の人がいる確率が高くなるという興味深い確率の話を、プロフェッショナルな語り口で分かりやすく紹介。
TOさんは、型破りで気まぐれながらも魅力のある上司とのエピソードを通して、難しい相手ともコミュニケーションの余地を残しておく大切さを伝えました。
Evaluation Session（論評）では、それぞれのスピーチの良かった点が丁寧に伝えられるとともに、さらに良くするための具体的なアドバイスも共有されました。横浜トーストマスターズの論評は、ただ褒めるだけではなく、相手の成長を願って率直かつ前向きにフィードバックするのが特徴です。この日も、声の表現、間の取り方、アイコンタクト、ボディランゲージなど、多くの学びがありました。さらに、Grammarian’s Report では印象的な英語表現や発音のポイントが紹介され、Ah-Counter’s Report では、フィラーワードがほとんど見られなかったことも報告されました。
今回の受賞者は、Best Table Topic Speaker: USさん、Best Evaluator: ORさん、Best Prepared Speaker: SNさん。どの受賞も納得の内容でした。

A Lively March 21 Meeting Filled with Learning, Energy, and Great Views
The March 21 meeting of Yokohama Toastmasters started right on time in a room overlooking Yokohama Port. With beautiful weather and a शानदार view outside, the meeting began in an uplifting atmosphere. We were also happy to welcome two guests, including one former member, which added to the warm and friendly mood of the day.
The meeting theme was “Top 3 of Something,” introduced by our Toastmaster of the Day, NM. Since the date was 3/21, he cleverly connected it to a countdown—3, 2, 1—and set a fun tone for the meeting. During the role introductions, members also shared their own “Top 3,” which helped everyone relax and enjoy the opening. The Word of the Day was “considerably / considerable,” and even its etymology was introduced, giving us one of those thoughtful and educational moments that make Toastmasters so enjoyable.
In the Table Topics Session, first-time Table Topics Master MO prepared a series of questions related to graduation ceremonies. Speakers were asked things like: What is your most memorable graduation ceremony moment? What would you say if you were suddenly handed a microphone? If you became a hero at a graduation ceremony, what kind of hero would you be? And what would you do if the principal suddenly started dancing? The creative questions brought out laughter, spontaneity, and plenty of imagination from the participants.
The Prepared Speech Session featured four engaging speeches, each with its own unique message.
MO shared a personal story about how she once tended to communicate too harshly with subordinates, but learned to improve those relationships by controlling her emotions and listening more carefully to others’ reasons.
QU gave a lively speech on how to sing English songs more naturally, even showing practical techniques and getting the audience to sing along, which made the session especially fun and interactive.
SN delivered a professional-style speech on the “Birthday Paradox,” explaining how, in a group of around 30 people, the probability of at least two people sharing the same birthday becomes surprisingly high.
TO spoke about a mysterious and unpredictable boss—someone difficult in many ways, yet also brilliant and strangely likable—and reminded us of the importance of keeping space open for communication, even with challenging people.
During the Evaluation Session, each speaker received thoughtful feedback highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement. This is one of the best parts of Toastmasters: members encourage one another not only with praise, but also with practical advice for growth. Comments covered storytelling, vocal variety, pacing, eye contact, and body language. We also enjoyed the Grammarian’s Report, which highlighted effective expressions and pronunciation points, and the Ah-Counter’s Report, which noted that there were almost no filler words during the meeting.
The award winners of the day were: Best Table Topic Speaker: US, Best Evaluator: OR, and Best Prepared Speaker: SN. Each award was well deserved.
