Meeting Report for October 3
We had a great turnout for today’s regular meeting, with 24 attendees, including three guests. The meeting kicked off right at 2:00 PM with the opening declaration by President TM H.S.
The first part of the business session was dedicated to recognizing two members who completed levels in the Pathways program.(Level 1: TM T.O., Level 5: TM T.S.)
Next, we held an induction ceremony for a new member, TM X.
Today’s “Word of the Day,” presented by TM K.M., was “laid-back.”
Our Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD) was the highly experienced TM H.A., and the meeting’s theme was “Cultural Differences”. Cultural differences—it’s not something that immediately springs to mind, but there certainly seem to be many examples…
The TMOD then introduced the role-takers for the meeting. I was particularly struck by a phrase from the Ah-Counter, TM M.T., who tracks filler words: “When you use filler words, just stop.” It really resonated with me. In fact, there were zero instances of filler words used by speakers today. That’s fantastic!

The first session was the Table Topics session — impromptu speeches.
Today’s Table Topics Master was TM E.
- What is one food from another culture that you tried and really enjoyed?
- What is one cultural difference between your country and another country that surprised you?
- What tradition or custom did you dislike as a child but appreciate as an adult?
- If you could introduce one tradition from your culture to the whole world, what would it be?
- Do you think that traditions should change with the times, or should they be preserved?
The five people selected to answer provided quick-witted and witty responses. What kind of answer would come to mind for you…?

Next was the Prepared Speech session. We had three speakers today.
The first speaker was TM M.M., with a speech titled “Where Does My Curiosity Come From?” She spoke about her recent trip to London, focusing on “oshi-katsu” (supporting her favorite idol/drama) and the experience of “living like a local.”
The second speaker was TM Y.A., with a speech titled “A Special Gift.” Y.A. showcased an astonishing ability her possess. This is a speech I’ll want to keep vividly in my memory!
The third speaker was TM T.T., with a speech titled “A Forest Is A Restaurant.” Speaking with her characteristic elegance, she described the forest ecosystem using unique and engaging expressions.

After a break, we held the “What’s Up Session” — an additional session to our meetings. This segment gives “silent members” — those who didn’t have a chance to speak earlier in the meeting — an opportunity to give a short speech (45 to 60 seconds) on the day’s theme.
Today, TM N. spoke about cultural differences involving the Kansai region. TM H.A. shared how they started using Audible for bedtime storytelling with their children and TM.T.S. gave a speech about the cultural differences between her and her husband. Everyone did an excellent job of structuring their talks within the limited time.
Next came the Evaluation session. Three evaluators provided feedback to the prepared speakers, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement while incorporating humor.
Finally, we announced the awards for the day’s best speakers. Congratulations!
- Best Table Topics Speaker: TM O.
- Best Evaluator: TM N.S.
- Best Speaker: TM Y.A.

The meeting wrapped up today with a laid-back atmosphere.

(レベル1:TM.T.Oさん、レベル5:TM.T.Sさん)
本日のWord Of The Day はTM.K.Mさんによる”Laid-back” です。
(Toastmaster Of the day=TMOD)は大ベテランのTM.H.Aさん、テーマは文化の違いです。
When you use filler words, just stop” というフレーズが「なるほど!」
Where Does My Curiosity Come From”最近行ったロンドン旅行での「推し活」と「地元の人のように暮らす振る舞い」について話をされました。
